It was nearly a year and a half ago when Samsung brought the S23 series, a matter of immense joy to Samsung enthusiasts in India. Historically, flagship devices from Samsung in specific regions, such as India, used in-house Exynos chipsets, which were usually found inferior when compared to Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors. Samsung, however, had done it this time; it listened to its loyal customer base and made sure to embed the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset within all three models: the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus and the Galaxy S23 Ultra; this was overwhelming.

Among the three models, the smallest Galaxy S23 gained significant attention. It struck the perfect balance between premium features and affordability. Compact yet powerful, it appealed to users seeking flagship performance in a smaller form factor. The device’s sleek design, vibrant display and exceptional camera capabilities made it an instant favourite.

The Galaxy S23 Plus, with its larger screen and extended battery life, catered to those craving a more immersive experience while the Galaxy S23 Ultra stood as the pinnacle of the series. Featuring a stunning display, an advanced camera system with 200 MP senson and the inclusion of the S Pen, the Ultra model was a powerhouse designed for enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Samsung’s decision to unify its chipset strategy across regions and deliver consistent, high-performance devices was a testament to its commitment to customer feedback.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is gaining attention once again due to massive discount offers. It is now available for under INR 39,999 on e-commerce websites, even without the season sale applicable. The smartphone was originally launched for INR 74,999. The recent price drop has made the Samsung Galaxy S23 one of the most valuable smartphones.

But should you consider it in 2024? Let’s analyse.

Samsung Galaxy S23 specifications

Size and design

The Samsung S23 is one of the most compact smartphones with a powerful chipset. Featuring an AMOLED display of 6.1 inches with FHD resolution, the screen is protected with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and gets an in-display fingerprint sensor. The device is just 7.6mm slim and weighs only 168 grams. The Samsung Galaxy S23 also has IP68 rating which means you can use the device is weatherproof. Even in 2024, the device feels premium because of its overall design and look.

Processor, AI and software

The Galaxy S23 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It is a decent chip but keep in mind that it is now a two-generation older flagship chip. The device is capable enough of handling all day-to-day and heavy tasks.

The device is currently running on Android 14 but it will get Android updates until 2027 and security updates until 2028, which means the device is still great and better than most other midrange devices in terms of processing power and updates.

Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy S23 will get all the latest Samsung Galaxy AI features like its elder siblings in the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Moreover, the newer Galaxy S24 comes with the Exynos chip, which could be a letdown for many fans. The Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S devices are a tad more efficient and faster.

Camera performance

The Samsung Galaxy S23 features an optically stabilised 50 MP main sensor. The 10 MP telephoto sensor is also optically stabilised with 3X optical zoom and there is a 12 MP ultrawide sensor. The device is capable of shooting 8K video at 30 FPS, which is the highest in the industry. The front camera of the Galaxy S23 has a 12 MP sensor and is also capable of shooting 4K videos at 60 FPS.

Samsung has also provided software-based ND filter support in the Galaxy S23 series, including the Galaxy S23. The device is one of the most capable camera phones in this price range in 2024.

In this price range, the Xiaomi 14 Civi may give tough competition to the Galaxy S23. It comes with a triple-camera setup on the rear and dual front-facing cameras.

Battery

This is the only department where the Samsung Galaxy S23 may disappoint if you are a pro user. Samsung has used a 3,900 mAh battery and pairs it with support for 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. The device also supports 4.5W reverse wireless charging. In day-to-day usage, users can expect approximately 6 hours of screen-on time.

In this price range, OnePlus 12R, iQOO Neo 9 Pro and Xiaomi 14 Civi come with better battery life.

Conclusion

If you think that compact devices are for you, then the Samsung Galaxy S23 is for you. The display impresses with its sharpness and HDR capabilities whereas the processor is powerful enough to handle all the workflow. If you are looking for a device to create content, enjoy AI features with entertainment and want a phone that can slip into your pocket easily, then this is the best deal in this price range.

That said, watch out for the Google Pixel 8a and even the Pixel 8 deals. Those phones occasionally retail for far lesser and offer an even better camera experience.
