Samsung’s Galaxy A series has always been a crowd favourite in the mid-range smartphone segment, especially for offline buyers. But with the upcoming Galaxy A56, Samsung seems to be taking a slightly different approach: one that’s both intriguing and a little perplexing. More power? Maybe but more than anything, it looks like Samsung wants to showcase the beauty of the device rather than focusing solely on hardware power.

The device is expected to come with an upgraded display, a larger battery and a better processor but it appears that Samsung has decided to downgrade the camera megapixels. Perhaps the brand will deliver better camera quality with an upgraded camera sensor despite the lower resolution.

Leaks and rumours have been swirling for weeks, giving us a fairly clear picture of what to expect. The Galaxy A56 will reportedly feature the new Exynos 1580 chipset, a massive battery, a 5100 mAh battery with 45W fast charging, all of which means that this phone could keep up with your daily grind. The display remains unchanged though; it is expected to feature a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate.

But then there’s the unexpected twist! A 12-megapixel front-facing camera will replacE the Galaxy A55’s 32-megapixel shooter. In an era where social media and selfies dominate, Samsung’s decision to cut megapixels is bound to raise eyebrows. Is it a strategic move or just a cost-cutting measure? Or is it the better selfie camera from the Galaxy S24?

With no official announcement yet, there is still plenty of room for surprises. But one thing’s for sure, whether for better or worse, the Galaxy A56 is shaping up to be a mid-range phone that gets people talking. Let’s dive into what makes it such an intriguing sequel.

Samsung Galaxy A56 expectations

Samsung is back at it again with another addition to its A series and this time it’s the Galaxy A56. If you thought the Galaxy A55 was the pinnacle of mid-range perfection, brace yourself—because Samsung has decided to shake things up in the most unexpected way possible. More power? Sure. Fewer selfie pixels? You bet. Because why wouldn’t they?

We have been hearing whispers about the Galaxy A56 for a while now and thanks to the ever-reliable OnLeaks, we already know what it looks like. The design? Well, it’s pretty much what you’d expect—sleek, modern and unmistakably Samsung. But the real treat comes courtesy of Evan Blass (aka evleaks), who has graced us with GIFs of the A56 flaunting its multiple colour options. Samsung’s strategy? If you can’t dazzle them with specs, at least give them pretty colours.

Samsung is continuing its love affair with homegrown Exynos chipsets, this time packing the A56 with the Exynos 1580 SoC. This is a step up from the A55’s Exynos 1480, which means more power and hopefully, better performance. Performance will likely be decent but if you’re looking for Snapdragon-level prowess, you’re barking up the wrong tree.

One thing Samsung does right is battery life and the Galaxy A56 keeps the trend alive with either a 5,000 mAh or 5,100 mAh battery. Why the indecision, you ask? Good question. Maybe Samsung is trying to keep us on our toes. Either way, it seems like a solid power pack that should get you through the day and then some. And when you finally do need to recharge, the 45W fast charging should get you back up and running in no time—because who has the patience to wait anymore?

Interesting downgrade?

Now, here’s where things get interesting. The Galaxy A55 came with a 32-megapixel selfie camera, a spec that would make any Vloggers or selfie enthusiasts swoon. But for reasons only Samsung knows, the A56 is downgrading to a 12-megapixel front shooter. The logic is baffling but hey, at least the camera bump looks good in those GIFs. Maybe better sensors from the Galaxy S flagships are on the way? Fingers crossed!

The same good Samsung AMOLED display

Despite the changes under the hood, Samsung isn’t messing with its winning display formula. Expect the same gorgeous Super AMOLED, 120Hz, 6.6-inch FHD screen that graced the A55. Because even Samsung knows you don’t fix what isn’t broken.

Final words...

With no official word from Samsung yet, all we have are leaks and rumours to go on. But from what we’ve seen, the Galaxy A56 is shaping up to be… well, an interesting choice. It’s more powerful than its predecessor but it also comes with some curious compromises. A better processor and faster charging are definite upgrades but that 12-megapixel selfie camera feels like a step back. Maybe Samsung is trying to teach us a lesson about vanity.

Or maybe they’re just saving the good stuff for the Galaxy A57, A58 or maybe A59.

If Samsung follows its usual schedule, we can expect the Galaxy A56 to make its grand debut next month, almost a year after the Galaxy A55 was unveiled. Until then, we’ll keep an eye out for more leaks, more colour options and maybe even an explanation for that selfie camera downgrade.

In a world where every phone looks the same and specs blend together, the Galaxy A56 dares to be different by being confusing. It’s a phone that takes two steps forward and one step back. But hey, at least it’ll look good doing it.
Would we recommend it? Too soon to tell. But one thing’s for sure, it’s going to get people talking. And maybe, just maybe, that’s exactly what Samsung wanted all along.
