The Model Y was probably the most ignored child in Tesla’s lineup until now! Although an early marketing-centric move for the Chinese market, the Model Y finally gets a modern refresh and unsurprisingly, the design seems all familiar!

Of course, the new Model Y looks drastically different from the one it replaces. However, this compact electric crossover is more of a facelift rather than an all-new generation and for 2025 and beyond, it chooses to ape its elder sibling – the Cybertruck and the Cybercab. The front and rear fascia of the Model Y love to remind us that the Cybertruck and Cybercab come from the same family! Look at those connected headlamps and tailamps!

However, the changes are more than just skin deep! The Model Y gets a notable boost in range and overall refinement. The price, as a result, has been bumped up too.

For the average Tesla and Elon Musk fan, this small increment in price shouldn’t be a deterrent in putting the electric crossover on a pedestal. There’s a reason the Model Y is one of the best-selling Tesla vehicles in the world!

2025 Tesla Model Y: What’s new?

For a facelift, the 2025 Model Y brings a lot of changes to the overall package. The prices have gone up considerably but you do get a lot more per car.

Tesla will initially sell the Model Y First Edition to Chinese customers, the base variant of which starts at CNY 263,500. This price will get you a single-motor rear-wheel drive variant only, which itself oversees a marginal boost in range and performance. Tesla claims that this variant should be able to deliver 593 km of range on a full charge. As far as acceleration is concerned, the RWD Model Y will do 0-100 kph in 5.9 seconds and flat out, it will reach a top speed of 201 kph.

The Long Range All-Wheel Drive model costs CNY 303,500, pampering its driver with a dual-motor setup. The claimed range is boosted to 719 km, which should suffice for most owners. The AWD model Y can accelerate from 0-100 kph in 4.3 seconds and flat out, it will reach a top speed of 201 kph.

For the time being, there’s no Performance variant of the Model Y available yet. Tesla being Tesla though, you can expect the beefy variant to come out later.

Charging speeds vary based on the variant. The RWD single-motor variant supports up to 170 kW DC fast charging whereas the AWD dual-motor variant supports up to 250 kW fast charging. Regardless of the variant, Tesla claims that a 15-minute charge will restore 250 km of range.

Are there any new tech features?

Unlike the Cybertruck and Cybercab, no new technological features have been added to the Model Y. However, the standard kit has been spiced up, thus making the Model Y more appealing than ever.

The Model Y now comes as standard with the basic version of Assisted Driving, which includes features like active cruise control and automatic lane keeping. Owners get to equip the Model Y with the optional Enhanced Autopilot pack for auto-assist navigation, auto-assist lane change, auto parking and summon modes for CNY 32,000. The second optional Fully Autonomous driving pack, which costs an additional CNY 64,000 and includes the benefits of the lesser packs, offers the ability to recognise and react to traffic lights along with automatic assisted driving in the city.

You get 19-inch allow wheels as standard and an all-dark cabin upholstery. The large touchscreen display stays but the dashboard now houses an ambient lighting solution to impart a wrap-around theme. Thankfully, the steering wheel remains conventional with its 3-spoke design.

Is the Tesla Model Y coming to India?

Sadly, as of writing this story, Tesla’s Indian chapter remains a mystery. There’s no idea whether Elon and his team of geniuses will bring Tesla to our shores anytime soon.
