Citroen and Tata Motors are currently the two automakers in India who are competing in the Coupe SUV segment but on the mass-market level. Citroen India has the Basalt, which was launched at Rs 7.99 lakh, while Tata has the Curvv but its ICE-based version is due for launch on September 2, 2024

For reference, the Curvv EV has already launched at Rs 17.49 lakh (ex-showroom).

Keeping the EV iteration aside, today, we’ll compare the internal combustion engine (ICE) based vehicles, as far as features and specifications go. So, let’s read on.

Dimensions

It is worth noting that the Citroen Basalt and Tata Curvv are not sub-4m cars.

The Citroen Basalt has a length of 4352mm, a width of 1765mm, a height of 1593mm, and a wheelbase of 2651mm. This vehicle has a boot capacity of 470 litres.

In parallel, the Tata Curvv measures 4308mm in length, 1810mm in width, 1630mm in height, and 2560mm in wheelbase. Interestingly, this homegrown Coupe SUV has a boot capacity of 500 litres.

Weighing these two vehicles, the Citroen Basalt has bigger proportions than the Tata Curvv, in terms of length and wheelbase. And, having a longer wheelbase translates to more legroom at the rear.

In contrast, the Tata Curvv is wider and has a larger boot capacity, indicating more shoulder room, and of course, more boot space.

As for their ground clearances, Tata Curvv and Citroen Basalt have suitable ride heights for Indian roads, albeit exact figures are unknown.

Specifications

The Tata Curvv is based on the new Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle Architecture (ATLAS) platform, plus this platform is designed to house multiple engine options and future Tata cars, including SUVs.

Speaking of engine options, the Curvv has two turbo-petrol engines: a new 1.2-litre Hyperion and a Nexon-borrowed 1.2-litre Revotron engine. The former produces 123bhp at 5000rpm and 225Nm of torque at 3500rpm, while the latter produces 118.27bhp at 5500rpm and 170Nm of torque at 3500rpm. Lastly, there is a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel Revotorq engine that produces 113.31bhp at 3750rpm and 260Nm of torque between 1500-2750rpm.

The Tata Curvv has a six-speed manual and an optional seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox.

On the other hand, the Citroen Basalt has two engine options: a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine and a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The former produces 82bhp and 115Nm of torque, while the latter produces 110bhp and 190Nm of torque (the AT version produces 205Nm).

The naturally-aspirated petrol engine is limited to a 5-speed manual, while the turbo-petrol has a standard 6-speed manual and an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Overall, the Tata Curvv has better engine figures than the Citroen Basalt.

Features

In this department, both Coupe SUVs are loaded with features, but the Citroen Basalt misses out on a few in-demand features, which should have been offered to get more competitive.

From the outside, the Tata Curvv and Citroen Basalt have more or less the same features, such as LED lights with LED DRLs at the front and LED lights at the rear, and they both have alloy wheels, but different tyre sections.

But, if we compare the main interior features, the Tata Curvv gets an edge, as it boasts a panoramic sunroof, an electronic parking brake, electrically adjustable front seat(s), ventilated front seats, and electric tailgate release.

Further, the Curvv has a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (both wireless), a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-speaker JBL-sourced audio system, and a 360-degree camera.

Unlike the Tata Curvv, the Citroen Basalt misses out on a sunroof, powered seats, ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera, an electronic parking brake, an electric tailgate release, and a branded audio system. However, it gets a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rearview camera, and segment-first adjustable under-thigh support for the rear passengers.

On the safety front, both vehicles are equipped with basic safety features, including 6 airbags, traction control, ABS with EBD, hill-assist, ESC, ISOFIX child-seat anchorages, and so on. And, as for ADAS, the Tata Curvv will have it, but we are unsure if the Citroen Basalt will have it in the future.

Pricing

The Citroen Basalt will have a detailed variant-wise price in the coming days, but the base spec carries an introductory price tag of Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom). On the other hand, the Tata Curvv is scheduled to launch on September 2, 2024, so, on that day, its price list will be out.

Further, the Citroen Basalt and Tata Curvv are direct competitors but similarly priced SUVs include the Kia Setlos, Hyundai Creta, Honda Elevate, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun, among others.
