Nintendo has stated that they are closing pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the US market. This move comes after the introduction of massive tariffs on exports from Japan. The company showed off its much-anticipated console last week - on the same day President Donald Trump revealed his plans for new global tariffs.

The Japanese gaming giant had stated that the US pre-orders will open again in a matter of days but it is now being forced to revise its plans.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not start April 9 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions," Nintendo said in a statement.

The company still plans to launch the handheld console on June 5 - going by the same timeline as it had decided beforehand.

Nintendo also confirmed that the announcement will only applied to the US market. This means US pre-orders will not be affected.

What are tariffs?

The tariffs are basically taxes which are charged on goods imported from other countries. Japan, where the gaming company is headquartered, has now been hit with a 24 per cent tariff - a cost which the gaming company must pass on to its consumers or take it upon itself.

US President Donald Trump has stated that these boost global tariffs will boost the US economy and protect jobs. However, the Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba called them a "national crisis" on Friday, according to reports published by the local media.

"The government will do its utmost to respond to this crisis, involving the entire country," he stated.

The pricing of the Nintendo Switch 2 has already been revealed. It is slated to cost $449.99 (Rs 34,350) in the US and will get a physical copy of the popular game Mario Kart World at $79.99 (Rs 6,500) - which will be priced lower if bought alongside the console.
