The Tata Punch’s domination was short-lived. The mighty Maruti Suzuki Wagon R retakes the lead from the Punch and ends up being the most sold car in the FY 2025. The Wagon R remains unbeatable! Take that, compact SUVs!
The Wagon R’s top sales figures help it retain its position as the undisputed champion for four years in a row! Despite Tata Motors managing to sell the Punch crossover hatchback more than any other vehicle in 2024, the FY 2025 data – which comprises of records between April 2024 to March 2025 – shows the Wagon R outselling the Punch and everything else that’s been on sale in India.
That said, it is worth noting that sales of the Wagon R were lower than the figures accumulated in the previous FY 2024 and FY 2023.
Wagon R remains the king of numbers
Between April 2024 and March 2025, Maruti Suzuki managed to sell 1,98,451 units of the Wagon R hatchback, edging out the 1,96,572 units of the Tata Punch. Surprisingly though, the sales of the Wagon R were evenly split between urban and rural areas – 48.2 per cent for rural India and 51.8 per cent for urban area. Sadly, Maruti doesn’t publish the exact distinction between private car owners and fleet owners in its total number of sales.
Considering the strong sales performance in FY 2025, Maruti Suzuki says that it has sold a total of 33.73 lakh units in the Wagon R’s overall life. The company also says that almost 25 per cent of existing Wagon R buyers choose the Wagon R as their new car! That’s a great number as far as brand loyalty is concerned.
But why do people love the Wagon R so much?
This is a recurring question amongst young Indian drivers, especially considering that Maruti Suzuki doesn’t upgrade the car very often. The current generation Wagon R was introduced in 2018 and the car has been largely left untouched, save for a minor cosmetic update and a couple of regulatory changes. Similar to most economy centric hatchbacks from Maruti, the Wagon R doesn’t offer many modern features and luxuries.
While the lack of features and the immense popularity with taxi drivers may have tarnished the Wagon R’s reputation, this hatchback celebrates a crucial aspect that most of its rivals don’t – efficiency.
The Wagon R offers the most amount of cabin space and headroom for a compact hatchback, thanks to the tallboy aesthetics. Coupled with the fuel efficient petrol engines that can also run on CNG, the Wagon R becomes a pocket friendly car to own.
By the way, did you know that the Wagon R comes with two engine options?
