With the flagship phone launches out of the way, the brands are now focusing on the cash-milking midrange segment. The much-rumoured Apple iPhone SE fourth generation is expected to boost life in the midrange segment, encouraging more competition. Ahead of that, Vivo has made an early move with its highly popular V series, bringing the V50 to India. Positioned as a camera-centric phone, the Vivo V50 relies on Zeiss optics and digital filters as well as a new design.

While Vivo presents it as an all-new handset, the basic spec sheet registers it as an iterative upgrade instead of an all-out overhaul. The chipset of the V50 has been carried over from the Vivo V40 and the same goes for the basic camera system. The price has been revised along with the colourways but you now get a larger capacity battery.

Unlike the previous launches though, Vivo has only introduced the vanilla V50 to the scene. There is a possibility for Vivo to bring the V50 Pro and a lighter-spec version of the V50 to India later in the year.

What has changed in the Vivo V50?

There are three big changes with the Vivo V50 over the outgoing V40 series.

1st, a big battery

The Vivo V50 features a larger 6,000 mAh capacity battery that promises up to 21 hours of video playback. The wired charging solution has also been enhanced to a faster 90W system. No wireless charging though!

Next, a new display

The V50 gets a new 6.7-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolution, a peak brightness of 4,500 nits and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The dual-side curved edges have given way to quad-curved panel and the Diamond Shield Glass promises to improve the drop resistance.

Lastly, the design

Although we can’t call it new technically, the V50 carries a refined design of its predecessor. The larger camera module with dual lenses (cleverly masked as one big camera) looks imposing. The new colourways – Rose Red, Starry Night and Titanium Grey – help distinguish the new one from the old one.

And what remains unchanged?

The camera hardware doesn’t change at all and that’s not necessarily bad, considering Vivo certifies it for the wedding season. The rear camera setup features a 50-megapixel primary sensor and a 50-megapixel ultrawide shooter, accompanied by Zeiss optics and digital filters. Even the front camera has a 50-megapixel shooter with autofocus functionality.

Then there’s the chipset! The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 is presently one of the best-balanced midrange chips in the Android realm. The base variant offers a combo of 8GB RAM and 128GB storage whereas the top-end version comes with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage.

The phone runs on Android 15-based FunTouch OS 15 out of the box. While Vivo hasn’t spoken anything about the software update policy, the phone is said to bring support for IP68 and IP69 water and dust resistance certification.

How much does the Vivo V50 cost?

The Vivo V50 will set you back by INR 34,999 if you opt for the base variant. The top-end variant with 512GB storage will cost INR 40,999.
