Samsung loves to stay ahead of everyone in the foldable smartphone space. It beat Apple and every other major name by launching Galaxy Fold in 2019. Hence, when Huawei unveiled the world’s first triple-folding smartphone with a dual-hinge system, how could Samsung swallow the chill pill? Even though work was going on at a rapid pace on bigger foldable screens, Samsung couldn’t keep itself from teasing its first tri-fold phone.

And now, the leaks are revealing more than Samsung would want at this point in time!

Compared to Huawei’s tri-fold phone, it seems that Samsung is going for a different implementation of a double-hinge triple-folding screen implementation. The idea is to create a phone that offers the versatility of switching between a compact 5.6-inch display and a large tablet-sized 10-inch canvas!

While the specs are still blurred, we have a fair idea about the product’s dimensions. We also know what the eggheads at Samsung could call it!

Samsung Galaxy G Fold! Jot that down

Yes! That’s what Samsung’s marketing team could be calling its first triple-folding smartphone. Rumours from Korea have confirmed that Samsung will call its first tri-fold phone the Galaxy G Fold. There’s no idea what the G stands for! Maybe G for Galaxy? Or G for…God?

While we await Samsung’s official take on the name and the device itself, the Galaxy G Fold nomenclature hints at a series of foldable devices in various shapes and sizes.

There’s more than just the name though

In order to give the Galaxy G Fold the large-scale attention it deserves, Samsung is rumoured to launch it in January 2026, most likely as a ‘One more thing’ product. While that gives Huawei a lot more time to tinker with its product and release a second-generation version of its Mate XT tri-fold, Samsung is betting on its global presence. Huawei’s phones, after all, are largely restricted to the Chinese market.

Then there’s the unique design that Samsung has penned up for its tri-fold design. While Huawei’s Mate XT folds into a stack of displays, rumours say that the Galaxy G Fold will fold on both sides! We have no idea how the implementation would work in real life and might need to wait for Samsung to reveal it officially. The Huawei Mate XT currently does it in a simpler way while exposing its foldable display on the right.

In its maximum folded-out state, the Galaxy G Fold is said to measure 9.96 inches ~ almost 10 inches, if you round off the numbers. That’s as large as an iPad! And when you want to use it as a phone, the Galaxy G Fold is supposed to shrink its useable display to 6.5 inches. The phone will weigh almost 300 grams, which is heavy for a phone but fairly lightweight for a tablet.

Unlike Huawei though, Samsung isn’t interested in achieving the slimmest profile on its tri-fold device. Hence, the Galaxy G Fold will be thicker at the edges.

And before you make assumptions, the display technology is totally new and not shared with the existing collection of Galaxy Z Fold model.

What remains to be seen, however, is the battery capacity and the choice of other basic specifications. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has faced criticism for its compact battery capacity and average cameras, especially in comparison to its competitors. Will the Galaxy G Fold change the norms in Samsung’s foldable department?
