Apple is all set to make its entire portfolio compatible with Apple Intelligence. After making headroom for the ‘AI’ features in last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Tim Cook and his boys developed the iPhone 16 series around Apple Intelligence. The Macs and a few iPads were also made compatible.
But we knew it would never be enough. With the arrival of the new iPad Mini 7th Generation, Apple reiterates its intentions to make Apple Intelligence a staple in all devices crowned with the coveted Apple logo.
The iPad, however, is likely to benefit the most out of the new AI features considering its target audience. Most of the Apple Intelligence features are designed to make life easy for creators on the go and the iPads with their large screens make them more accessible. That applies even to the compact iPad Mini, which essentially has a display size not substantially larger than this year’s iPhone 16 Pro Max.
While we await the arrival of Apple Intelligence in a stable form, we decided to take a look at all the iPads that will be compatible with Apple’s AI in the coming months. Thankfully, the iPad lineup doesn’t discriminate on the basis of affordability, unlike the iPhones.
All Apple iPads that support Apple Intelligence
Let’s begin with the latest addition to the lineup.
iPad Mini 7
Released in: October 2024
The iPad Mini 7 is possibly the only iPad that has been designed solely to accommodate Apple Intelligence. While the core form factor remains unchanged (and so does the 60 Hz 8.3-inch LCD display), the new A17 Pro chip borrowed from the iPhone 15 Pro makes it eligible for Apple Intelligence other than giving a healthy boost in raw processing performance. It can also run AAA video games, if that’s a major concern.
Here are all the existing iPad models that are compatible with Apple Intelligence.
iPad Air with M series chips
Compatible devices: iPad Air M1, iPad Air M2 11-inch, iPad Air M2 13-inch
All the devices based on the Apple Silicon M-series chips are compatible with Apple Intelligence and that makes the recent versions of the iPad Air the lucky ones. The iPad Air M1 from 2022 and the iPad Air M2 variants from 2024 are eligible to get Apple Intelligence features once the iPadOS 18.1 update drops in its stable form.
Compared to the iPad Mini 7, the iPad Air with its Mac-derived chips offer more grunt for complex tasks like video editing, simulation and coding apps and for demanding video games. Consider the iPad Air as a watered-down iPad Pro.
Since we touched upon the iPad Pro…
iPad Pro with M series chips
Compatible devices: iPad Pro M1 (both sizes), iPad Pro M2 (both sizes), iPad Pro M4 (both sizes)
The iPad Pro is the flagship offering in Apple’s tablet lineup and hence, qualifies for compatibility with Apple Intelligence. The iPad Pro with M1, M2 and M4 chips currently promise the best Apple Intelligence experience you can expect from an iPad.
With high refresh rate OLED display and support for the Apple Pencil Pro stylus, the new iPad Pro M4 is a portable powerhouse for creators and professionals who seek the might of a Mac with the versatility of a touchscreen tablet.
Note: The iPad 10th Gen is not compatible with Apple Intelligence and hence, won't get the features when iPadOS 18.1 drops later in the year. However, you can still enjoy similar AI features with a few workarounds.
