Apple announced the Vision Pro in June 2023 in the hope to revolutionise the mixed-reality segment. The plan, however, faltered, with many calling it out for its exorbitant price and an undesirable user experience. Hence, it was surprising to see many customers returning it within days of the earliest deliveries.
The Cupertino-based tech giant struggled to sell even 100,000 units of the Vision Pro by July 2024. The situation was so challenging that the brand had to revise its sales target from 3 million units down to 900,000 units.
Fast-forward to the end of 2024, and Apple is now planning to end production of the Vision Pro.
Don't worry AR fans, as Apple isn't done with the platform yet. The company has focused entirely on its next-generation mixed-reality headset. With the Vision Pro 2, Apple aims to rewrite its difficult start in the augmented reality (AR) market.
What will the Vision Pro 2 offer?
The Apple Vision Pro 2 is likely to retain the same design as its predecessor. It won’t undergo many external changes but could feature significant internal upgrades to enhance the user experience.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that while the Vision Pro 2 will not see major hardware and design changes, it will introduce other modifications to allow Apple offer it at a more competitive price. For comparison, the Meta Quest Pro costs USD 1,499, and it will be interesting to see if Apple can bring the Vision Pro 2 closer to this price point, as the current Vision Pro is priced at USD 3,499.
Apple is expected to reuse the same 4K 23-million-pixel micro-OLED display for the Vision Pro 2. Currently, the Vision Pro lacks a long battery life, offering only two hours of usage. With its successor, we anticipate that Apple will improve this aspect.
Compared to the M2 chip in the outgoing model, the Vision Pro 2 will receive a major internal upgrade with the M5 chip, allowing the headset to support Apple Intelligence.
In his report, Gurman mentions that the Vision Pro 2 will include ‘killer’ AI features that could increase demand for the device. Apple could club AI with spatial computing to make it stand out from the Vision Pro. It could also bring better eye tracking and superior hand-gesture control in its upcoming mixed-reality headset.
The Vision Pro 2 may also bring Sora, OpenAI's text-to-video AI model to make it useful.
Gurman notes that the Vision Pro’s ability to provide a virtual Mac external screen with an ultrawide size option is a standout feature, and Apple may develop additional features around this for the successor.
The Vision Pro 2 is expected to launch with VisionOS 2 and offer a vast library of new applications.
Beyond these changes, everything else on the Vision Pro 2 is likely to remain the same as on the first generation Vision Pro.

When will the Vision Pro 2 launch?
According to a Bloomberg report, the second-generation Vision Pro will launch between fall 2025 and spring 2026, which suggests a release between September 2025 and March 2026. It will go under mass production somewhere in mid-2025.
How much will the Vision Pro 2 cost?
The Vision Pro was launched at USD 3,499, a price many consumers didn’t find justified. With the Vision Pro 2, Apple’s primary goal is expected to be to make the device more affordable for a broader audience. Hence, a price reduction is anticipated.

Will there be a cheaper Vision Pro headset?
Apple was previously reported to be working on an affordable version of the Vision Pro to make it more accessible. However, this plan has reportedly been shelved, according to Mark Gurman’s report. Instead, the company is now focused on providing a premium experience for its AR/VR users with the Vision Pro 2.
