The Apple iPhone SE is coming back for a fourth term and this time, it is going modern (as per Apple's standards).

What started out in 2016 as a low-effort exercise to boost sales by tapping into the midrange segment turned out to be a great way for Apple to lure more customers to its ecosystem. The first two generations of the iPhone SE were solely designed to tap into the flourishing midrange Android smartphone segment and it worked to a greater extent. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the market dynamics and eventually, the retro iPhone SE lost its charm.

People no longer wanted a tiny iPhone at a premium when they could spend a bit more for a more modern one. This is what the iPhone SE 4 fourth generation is expected to change.

Apple continued using older-generation displays on the iPhone SE devices but this time, the fourth generation model may finally receive some modern treatment. The latest SE model is expected to have a 6.06-inch display, which is nearly the same size as the iPhone 16’s 6.1-inch display. Rumour has it that Apple may also incorporate an iPhone 12-style notch in this model.

These aren't exactly modern traits but they give the iPhone SE a much needed facelift. But will it be enough to tempt people to get on board the Apple ecosystem?

Brief history of the iPhone SE series

On March 31, 2016, Apple introduced the first generation iPhone SE globally. It combined the body of the iPhone 5s with the A9 chipset from the iPhone 6s.

For the iPhone SE second generation released in 2020, Apple used the body of the iPhone 8 and infused the A13 Bionic processor from the iPhone 11 Pro.

Similarly, with the iPhone SE third generation released in 2022, Apple reused the iPhone 8’s body and infused it with the A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13 Pro series to make it compatible with 5G networks.

What does the iPhone SE 4 have in store for us?

A Twitter user, Jukanlosreve, has leaked the main specifications of the upcoming iPhone SE 4. According to rumours, the phone may feature a 6.06-inch display with a 2532x1170 resolution, 460 ppi pixel density and 800 nits brightness. The screen is expected to have a 60Hz refresh rate and use Ceramic Shield glass for added durability.

If the leaks are accurate, the phone will be 7.8mm slim and house a 3279mAh battery. It will be powered by the A18 SoC, which is also found in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

Following its predecessors, the iPhone SE 4 is said to have a single rear camera sensor once again but Apple could upgrade it to a 48-megapixel sensor this time, with a 12-megapixel front-facing camera. It could also be featuring LPDDR5X 8GB RAM to make it eligible for Apple Intelligence. The base model could offer 128GB of onboard storage as standard.

Since it is an all-USB-C affair for Apple these days, the iPhone SE 4 could get a USB-C charging port. Additionally, the phone may come with Wi-Fi 6, IP68 dust and water resistance, 20W wired charging along with 15W Qi2 wireless and MagSafe charging support.

With these specs, the iPhone SE 4 appears to combine elements of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 16.

Will it make Apple Intelligence affordable?

If the spec sheet is to be believed, the iPhone SE 4 is essentially a wateredd-down version of the iPhone 16. Equipped with the latest A18 SoC and 8GB RAM, it has all the necessary capabilities to support Apple’s advanced AI features. This could make it the most affordable iPhone with full AI support.

Will it feature Camera Control?

The iPhone SE series is expected to follow the design lines of the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. It seems unlikely that Apple will include the Camera Control feature in this segment. Adding this feature could risk affecting the sales of the iPhone 16 series.

Expected price of iPhone SE 4

In India, Apple launched the iPhone SE 2022 for INR 44,999 back in 2022 for the 64GB variant. However, the revised market dynamics could now see the iPhone SE 4 positioned at a premium upon its arrival in India.

We expect the iPhone SE 4 to have a price tag competitive enough to challenge the likes of Samsung's Galaxy S24 FE and Google's Pixel 8a.
