Google seems to be speeding things up to get its latest innovations into users’ hands faster than before. Recently, the company surprised everyone by launching the Pixel 9 series in August, a couple of months ahead of the usual October schedule. Rumour has it that the Pixel 9a could follow suit, with a possible release in March 2025— two months earlier than usual.

This shift isn’t just limited to hardware; there’s a rumour that Google might launch Android 16 ahead of schedule.

This speculation gained traction after Matthew McCullough, Vice President of Product Management for Android Developer, mentioned it in a post on the Android Developer Blog. It looks like Google is taking a fresh approach to keep up with the competition and meet user expectations even sooner.

Not only would we be getting Android 16 early but Google could release an updated Android 16.1 later in the year 2025!

Android 16 is said to be released in the second quarter of 2025 instead of the third quarter of 2025.

According to the blog post, the firm is shifting its launch date to align device launches in the Android ecosystem so that more Android devices can receive major updates sooner than expected. The timeline in the blog explains that the major version of Android is expected to be released between April and June, and there will be another update between October and December 2025 to fix bugs and errors to make devices smoother. So overall, Android users will receive two important updates by the end of 2025.

If Google can stick to this timeline, we can expect the early launch of the Pixel 10 series with a new Android 16 on board. Samsung's foldables may also come out with the newest Android versions instead of running the previous iteration. All this could help the Android ecosystem provide a strong fight to Apple's annual software release.

What's new for non-Pixel users

Google rolled out the Android 15 update a few weeks ago for the latest generation Pixel 9 series. Fun fact: the Pixel 9 series launched with the older Android 14, which originally came out in late 2023 with the previous generation Pixel 8 series.

Not only this, but we have also seen more flagship devices like the Samsung Flip 6 and Samsung Fold 6 with the older Android version. It is expected that Google may address these issues with the change in the release timeline of software and devices.

Budget Android users typically experience new operating system updates months (or even years) after flagship models. Skin-based Android OS developers often require more time to update their versions. However, the new timeline may lead to earlier software updates for the lower end of the Android phone segment.

To achieve overall productivity, Google will work in collaboration with its Android partners.
