In an evergrowing market of smartphones, French brand Alcatel initiates its innings in India. Operated by TCL Communications under trademark licensing from Nokia, Alcatel will take on the affordable segment in India in its initial stages.

For those who are unaware, Alcatel has been a notable name in the western digital arena that has changed hands under multiple owners. After making a splash in the early 2010s with some of the coolest Android phones, Alcatel changed ownership and went to Nokia, which eventually licensed the brand name to China’s TCL Communications.

In the present world, Alcatel mostly limits itself to affordable entry-level smartphones in Western countries. The brand now wants a share of India’s ever-growing smartphone market and has thus announced its official entry. The brand continues to be operated by TCL Communications, the same brand that once sold Blackberry’s Android phones.

Alcatel is coming to India

For its Indian journey, Alcatel wants to go the slightly premium route. Although there’s no name for its first smartphone yet, Alcatel’s press release states that the device will feature a stylus as one of the key differentiators from the rest of its competition. A slew of other phones will follow, promising “cutting-edge technology and India’s first patented innovations (pending or granted) along with a stylish design inspired by French heritage, advanced hardware, and unique features—all while remaining accessible to the rapidly expanding Indian consumer market.”

Sounds promising, doesn’t it?

In a bid to attract all the benefits from the Indian government, Alcatel says that its operations will follow the ‘Make in India’ scheme. The brand also promises to establish a pan-India service network to ensure seamless support for its consumers.

"At Alcatel, our vision for India is to democratise innovation by making premium features accessible to a broader audience. Our devices seamlessly merge style and performance, catering to tech enthusiasts, urban aspirants, fashion-conscious consumers, and digital nomads alike. We believe that technology should not only be powerful but also reflect the latest trends, and we are excited to introduce products that embody this philosophy in the Indian market," says Atul Vivek, CBO (Chief Business Officer).

Will Alcatel be a threat to Xiaomi, Samsung and Oppo?

Nothing can be deduced until Alcatel drops its first smartphone. Based on all the promises, it seems that the first device from the brand is likely to be a midrange device focusing on the stylus accessory. The stylus has been a staple of Samsung’s high-end Galaxy S Ultra devices so far and Alcatel is now willing to utilise it in the hope of a breakthrough. If Alcatel manages to ensure a fine balance between features and price, it could have a shot at the giants of the industry.
