The summer of fancy midrange phones is here. Apple came up with the iPhone 16e for those willing to move over from the Android platform. Google couldn’t let that happen and hence, came up with an equally compelling midrange Pixel device – the Pixel 9a. OnePlus has the OnePlus 13R whereas Samsung has been taking care of the segment with the Galaxy S24 FE. There’s been a lot of activity in this segment but it is Google that’s about to slay with the Pixel!
The Pixel 9a was revealed as a surprise announcement way earlier than its predecessors were. Based on the core platform of the Pixel 9, the Pixel 9a promises to offer some of the smart AI thrills and perks without asking for an exorbitant price. The pricing, in fact, is the biggest reason to grab the Pixel 9a over the relatively unpopular iPhone 16e – a phone that hasn’t been a favourite of the critics and Apple fans alike.
Google went all in detailing the specifications and other features but kept the launch date to itself. At the time, it was assumed that Google could be going for a late Summer launch, months ahead of the Pixel 10 series. However, the Pixel team dropped another surprise by revealing the launch date and the best bit is that you don’t need to wait forever for the new Pixel!

Based on the official announcement from Google, the Pixel 9a is coming will hit showroom floors across the world by mid-April 2025. While some European nations like Germany, Spain, Italy and Ireland will gain access to the device by April 14, Indian buyers can bag the Pixel 9a from April 16. Google is selling a single variant of the handset with a starting price of INR 49,999 and there will be three colourways to choose from at launch.
The older generation Pixel 8a continues to sell at a lower price but Google could phase it out as soon as the stocks are exhausted.
Is the Pixel 9a a better premium midrange alternative to iPhone 16e?
That depends on what you seek from your phone.
The Pixel 9a continues in the footsteps of its a-series predecessors by ensuring certain compromises to keep the price accessible. Hence, while the Tensor G4 chipset is borrowed from the Pixel 9, the display uses a slightly thicker bezel version of the 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED panel. While the display retains the optical fingerprint sensor, the glass protection drops to Gorilla Glass 3 from the Pixel 9’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
The camera system includes a theoretically inferior 48-megapixel primary shooter with f/1.7 aperture lens and an accompanying 13-megapixel secondary shooter with an ultrawide lens. The 13-megapixel front camera lacks the autofocus system you find on a Pixel 9.
The Pixel 9a also loses out on the SOS Satellite connectivity service but it gains numbers in a crucial area compared to the Pixel 9 – battery capacity. The Pixel 9a gets a large 5,100 mAh cell with support for 23W wired and a slower 7.5W wireless charging solution. On paper, this should allow for a healthy battery stamina.
Look beyond the specifications and the Pixel 9a accompanies a bunch of generative AI features. From summarising text on a webpage to creating custom images and offering advanced photo editing tools, the Gemini AI suite could make the Pixel 9a a great pick for those who seek a feature-packed modern phone.
In contrast, the iPhone 16e seems more of a compromise when compared to the vanilla iPhone 16. A lesser capable version of the A18 chip, an old-school 6.1-inch OLED display with the dated camera notch, a single downgraded rear camera and a less capable Apple Intelligence AI feature pack. Add to that the higher acquisition price of INR 59,999 for the base 128GB variant and the Pixel 9a ends up being a sweeter deal to pocket.
