Apple is reportedly preparing to expand its iPhone lineup in 2025 with a new model called the iPhone 17 Air. Expected to launch alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, this new addition could introduce a dramatically slimmer design and a fresh take on Apple’s smartphone aesthetic.

According to early leaks and renders shared online, the iPhone 17 Air may feature an ultra-thin body with a thickness between 5.5mm and 6mm, potentially making it the slimmest iPhone ever. This would surpass the iPhone 6, which was previously Apple’s thinnest model. The design reportedly emphasizes a lightweight, sleek feel, appealing to users prioritizing portability and elegance.

Thin Profile Means Bigger Problems

However, the thin profile could come with a few compromises. The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to include a single 48-megapixel rear camera, lacking optical zoom and possibly featuring lower-quality front camera and speaker components than the higher-end models. Notably, leaked images suggest the rear camera may be housed in a wide rectangular module, marking a departure from the circular and square camera bumps seen in previous iPhones. Though these renders are unofficial, they hint at a visual shift in Apple's design approach.

Performance-wise, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be powered by the standard A19 chip, as opposed to the more advanced A19 Pro chip rumored for the Pro and Pro Max variants. This positioning reinforces the idea that the Air will be a mid-tier model—more affordable than the Pro versions but distinct from the base iPhone 17 in design.

In terms of display, the iPhone 17 Air could sport a screen between 6.6 and 6.7 inches, larger than the anticipated 6.3-inch display on the iPhone 17 but slightly smaller than the 6.9-inch Pro Max. This could cater to users who want a larger screen without the added bulk of the flagship model.

Apple’s previous attempts to diversify its iPhone lineup, such as the iPhone mini and iPhone Plus, have seen mixed success. The iPhone 17 Air may offer a fresh strategy: combining a unique, ultra-thin form factor with moderate specs to appeal to design-conscious buyers.

The full iPhone 17 series is expected to be announced during Apple’s September 2025 fall hardware event. Until then, all leaked details should be considered speculative.
