Planning to settle in Telangana? You now have a great reason to do so.
In the past few days, the air quality index has shown hazardous levels in the majority of North Indian states, especially in New Delhi and Haryana, where the government urges people to stay at home. In some areas, colleges and schools have been shut down but these are not solutions to stop air pollution. While staying indoors can prevent lung damage, many people, especially roadside vendors and auto drivers, cannot afford the luxury of working from home or taking a holiday.
In the past, the former Delhi CM, Mr Kejriwal, implemented the odd-even rule but due to various reasons, the Delhi government decided to revoke it. After all attempts, the government can only request people to switch to EV vehicles to control air pollution to some extent.
Currently, the EV market is expanding in India, with options available in all segments, from budget to luxury, including cars and bikes.
The Telangana government, however, has put into effect a new initiative to boost electric vehicle sales in the region.

The Telangana government has understood the situation and decided to offer discounts to encourage people to choose electric vehicles over regular gas-based vehicles. The government has decided to exempt 100 per cent of the road tax and registration fees from the purchase of electric vehicles. This scheme was announced by the state's Transport Minister, Poonam Prabhakar.
Initially, it was expected that the scheme would be available only for two and three-wheelers but the state government has now clarified that the exemption is available for every electric vehicle, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers, three-wheelers and other commercial and light goods carriers like taxis and buses.

Not only this, but the exemption is also applicable to the registration fees of buses owned by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation as well as buses owned by any other industry for transporting their employees.
However, there's a catch.
The government has also announced that the exemptions will be valid for two years, until December 31, 2026. There will be no limit on the number of EV registrations though.
According to the government, this step was taken to spread awareness about the use of electric vehicles, with the primary goal of reducing pollution levels in Hyderabad and other areas.

The reason behind the new transport policy
The purpose of this policy is to improve the air quality index of the state and prevent people from suffering, as seen in other states. The previous state government had also introduced a policy, but it was never implemented. The Minister added that he travelled to four states with Transport Commissioner Surendra Mohan to study policies aimed at reducing pollution before implementing one here. After careful study, they devised the best possible policy to meet the state's requirements.
He also emphasised that firms manufacturing electric vehicles should take responsibility for setting up charging stations to ensure vehicle owners do not face difficulties. He mentioned that, to date, approximately 1.7 lakh EVs have been registered in the state and five out of every hundred vehicles are electric.
