The Triumph Scrambler 400X has been one of the greatest offroad-friendly motorcycles in the sub-500cc single-cylinder category, competing with what’s possibly considered the greatest single-cylinder adventure tourer – the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. Based on the Speed 400, the Scrambler 400X offers a well-tuned suspension package to deal with India’s supremely maintained expressways as well as ill-maintained state highways and challenging off-road trails.
However, not everyone can afford the Scrambler 400X, courtesy of the premium that the Triumph badge attracts. Considering the Bajaj backing for the 400cc motorcycle project, it seems that gears have turned within the corporate structures and a need for a more accessible model emerged. Hence, it is not surprising to see a new prototype of a Triumph 400cc scrambler motorcycle spotted testing uncamouflagued.
Bajaj-Triumph’s next project is likely to involve a more accessible scrambler motorcycle and based on the rumours, it could be called the Triumph Scrambler 400XC.
Triumph Scrambler 400XC: What does it bring?
Based on all the information at hand, the Scrambler 400XC seems to be an offroad-centric version of the Speed 400, poised to take on the fresh-off-the-oven KTM 390 Adventure and rumoured Himalayan 450 rally version.
The leaked photograph obtained via Acko Drive suggests that this is a beefier version of the Scrambler 400X. While the general body style remains identical to the 400X, the Scrambler 400XC gets certain additional bits like a high-set front mudguard, a metal bash plate for the engine, an opaque flyscreen, a supposedly new tail section and those new wheels. Triumph is finally bringing wire-spoke tubeless rims to its 400cc category motorcycle for the first time, thus allowing for greater convenience without giving up the durability of spokes.

The photo also suggests the Scrambler 400XC retaining 19-inch wheels up front and 17-inch wheels at the back. The engine seems to remain unchanged from the one is the present day model, which isn’t a bad deal considering the benchmark that Triumph’s 398cc single-cylinder engine set. Hence, as far as performance is concerned, this Scrambler 400XC should be a great motorcycle, both on and off the road.
What happens with the Scrmabler 400X?
There could be two possibilities: either Triumph could kill the 400X, or it could be kept alongside the Scrambler 400XC.
With all the upgrades seen on the Scrambler 400XC, there is a mega possibility of Triumph hiking the price by tens of thousands of Rupees. The Scrambler 400X could be retained as the more accessible model tailored for light off-road usage and superior highway cruising requirements. The Scrambler 400XC, on the other hand, could end up being the more off-road-centric version geared to absorb the punishment from the most brutal terrains the world has to throw at it.
