The Aprilia RS 457 began a new era for motorcycle enthusiasts in India. It made an Italian twin-cylinder engine motorcycle more accessible. Now, it's time for its road-bred Tuono sibling to arrive!

The RS 457 impressed enthusiast riders with its impressive performance, striking Italian styling and advanced riding aids. No one anticipated a twin-cylinder engine, fully faired ergonomics, and an Italian pedigree at such an aggressive price point. It was even priced cheaper than its Japanese rivals!

Now, the Italian twin-cylinder motorcycle engine, which symbolises speed and innovation, aims to win urban riders and touring enthusiasts with a Tuono 457.

But why a Tuono 457?

As great as the RS 457 is to ride, this motorcycle requires a committed track-style riding posture and that makes it difficult for daily commuting on Indian roads.

However, the Tuono offers a contrasting experience. On the larger 660 platform, if you found yourself feeling cramped with the closed-leg and bent-back posture of the RS660, the Tuono equivalent has provided a comfortable alternative, creating an ideal riding position for long journeys.

In the Tuono series, the engine is exposed from the side while the front semi-fairing retains a resemblance to the RS series. The seating posture is entirely upright, complemented by raised handlebars, making this bike ideal for comfortable long rides that the RS series may lack.

Hence, in light of the success of the RS 457, the manufacturer is seemingly coming out with the Tuono 457 to attract a wider audience.

Aprilia has recently released a teaser video for the Tuono 457 expected to make its debut at EICMA 2024. Rumours suggest that Aprilia may also utilise the same twin-cylinder 457cc engine in its adventure tourer, the Aprilia Tuareg 457.

Let’s leave Tuareg 457 for the future and explore what Aprilia has in store for comfort-oriented riders:

Engine and performance

The Aprilia is expected to use the same twin-cylinder 457cc engine for this bike with minor changes in performance numbers. The current engine produces 46.9 bhp at 9400 RPM power and 43.5 Nm at 6700 RPM torque. Our wild guess is that Aprilia may tune the engine mapping for better real-world road performance, probably with enhanced torque figures.

Design

Aprilia is likely to borrow many elements from the RS 457 for the Tuono 457. We can expect parts of the bodywork to be shared between the two models. The split headlight design along with a muscular fuel tank and the cut-down fairing could give the Tuono a beefier road presence.

The Tuono 457 may also follow the pattern set by the Tuono 660, featuring a tubular handlebar for a slightly upright riding position, which could be ideal for long rides while maintaining the characteristic Tuono seating posture.

Additionally, the bike is expected to come equipped with the same LCD instrument cluster as the Aprilia RS 457, allowing riders to monitor speed, fuel consumption, temperature and other important notifications. Safety and performance features such as ABS, traction control, a quickshifter and smartphone connectivity may also be included.

Hardware and suspension

We can anticipate that the Tuono 457 will feature a slightly softer suspension compared to the stock RS 457, potentially incorporating adjustable forks and a mono-shock suspension at the rear. The motorcycle is expected to be equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels covered with road-friendly Pirelli Diablo Rosso 4 tyres. For quick braking performance, it may include a single-disc braking system at both the front and rear ends.

Price and Competition

The Aprilia Tuono 457 is expected to carry a slightly higher price tag than the Aprilia RS 457. It is also expected to give tough competition to the Kawasaki Versys 650 and Triumph Trident 660. Those considering the Royal Enfield 650 twins should also hold on their purchase decisions to find out if the Tuono 457 could be a tempting alternative to the GT 650 and Interceptor 650.

The upcoming Aprilia Tuono 457 can be a powerful machine for everyday use, and its comfortable riding position will benefit riders on long tours.
