BMW India is preparing to launch the internal combustion engine version of the eight-generation 5 Series. For those unaware, the company recently launched the top-spec of the all-electric version of this sedan, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive

It is also worth mentioning that the upcoming 5 Series saloon will be launched in the long-wheelbase (LWB) guise for the first time in India. The LWB version of this car was only sold in selected international markets. This specific iteration will enhance the passenger’s experience.

So, let’s read about the expected offerings of the (8th-gen) BMW 5 Series.

Appearance

The new BMW 5 Series (G60) has gone sleeker and sharper while maintaining the grille’s size. The grille on the front bumper is wider and more upright than the predecessor but it’s not the same as the new 7 Series or M3 or M4, for that matter. Like other BMWs, this vehicle already has polarising opinions, as far as the looks are concerned.

However, the grille is flanked by BMW’s Adaptive LED headlights, while the front bumper’s lower section has an exposed grille for the engine to breathe. In parallel, the bonnet has some sharper lines, which give an imposing look.

As for the side profile, this sedan is successful in exuding the long-wheelbase appeal as it looks neat. The flush door handles have also made the car look more premium. In addition, the redesigned BMW’s signature Hoffmeister Kink incorporates the ‘5’ badging. Besides that, this sedan now runs on more aerodynamic and light alloy wheels.

In parallel, the rear end of this new generation mid-size sedan now incorporates sleeker and futuristic-looking LED tail lights. As per sources, this iteration won’t have a real exhaust tip visible, as the exhaust pipe’s tip will finish behind the starting of the rear bumper.

As far as the dimensions are concerned, the 2024 5 Series LWB has a length of 5175mm, a width of 1900mm, and a height of 1520mm. These figures make the new generation 212mm longer, 32mm wider, and 41mm taller than the previous seventh generation (codenamed G30) iteration.

Interior

As seen in new-age BMW cars, this German saloon will also have a curved dual-screen display, each dedicated to a touchscreen infotainment unit and a digital instrument cluster. The former unit measures 14.9 inches, while the latter measures 12.3 inches.

Several design cues are borrowed from BMW’s flagship, the 7 Series. That includes the layout and design of the ambient lighting, centre console, steering wheel, upholstery, and some features.

Features onboard are the latest iDrive 8.5 Operating System, an optional Interaction Bar with touch controls, four-zone auto HVAC, a premium 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and leather upholstery with front ventilated seats. On the safety front, this sedan is expected to have ADAS features.

Powertrain

The German carmaker hasn’t announced the powertrains for the Indian market. But, it is highly expected that they will bring the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system, which powered the BMW 530i (G30). This vehicle is expected to make the rear wheels spin via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Apart from that, we doubt that they’ll offer the diesel-powered 5 Series in India, as there is a growing demand for petrol cars in the country. However, the details will be available once launched.

Market Positioning

Once launched on July 24 in India, the BMW 5 Series (8th-Gen) will continue to lock horns with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB, and Audi A6.
