The most-anticipated 2024 BMW 5 Series has finally entered the Indian shores but in all-electric form. This five-seater German saloon is the eighth generation (codenamed G60) and is the first 5 Series to offer an all-electric powertrain, dubbed the ‘i5.’

BMW took the completely built unit (CBU) route for the i5 like all other BMW electric models in India. The available all-electric models in our country comprise the iX1, iX, i4, and i7, making the i5 a fifth iteration.

Bookings for the BMW i5 commenced on April 4, 2024.

BMW i5 M60 xDrive: Powertrain and Range

The BMW i5 M60 xDrive, the top-spec trim of the BMW i5 is powered by an 83.9kWh (81.2kWh usable) battery pack, which has a combined output of 601bhp and 795Nm of peak torque. This vehicle has a 5th-generation BMW eDrive technology with a dual electric motor setup - one on each axle at the front and rear.

Since this electric sports saloon has an ‘xDrive’ badge, it means that the offered battery pack powers all four wheels.

The BMW i5 M60 xDrive has a WLTP range of 516km on a single charge. The German luxury automobile manufacturer claims that the M60 xDrive trim of the i5 can do 0-100kmph (62mph) in just 3.8 seconds. It has a top speed of 230kmph.

BMW i5 M60 xDrive: Charging

As for charging, the BMW i5 comes with an 11kW wall charger as a complement and has an optional 22kW AC charger. The former takes around 8hrs 25mins, while the latter takes 4hrs 25minutes to replenish the battery from 0-100%.

BMW i5 M60 xDrive: Features (Interior)

The new generation 2024 BMW 5 Series is totally different from its predecessor. That said, BMW is driving towards experimentation, electrification, digitalisation, and sustainability; aiming to attract new and evolving customers.

This sedan has a curved dual-screen setup, as seen in new-age BMW models. In the BMW i5, you will get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. The integrated operation system is BMW’s latest 8.5 software.

The newly laid-out cabin has a similar ambient lighting setup as the BMW i7 and contains fifteen colour options. The ambient lighting is dynamic (called BMW Interaction Bar), which can be experienced by enabling hazard lights, selecting drive modes, and during ADAS-related warnings. It remains to be seen if BMW India will offer a Level-2 ADAS in the new 5 Series.

For convenience, this sedan also offers 40:20:40 foldable rear seats.

Last but not least, this BMW has two upholstery options: M Alcantara-Veganza combination and only Veganza upholstery. The former is limited to black colour, while the latter is perforated and quilted and has several colour options like Smoke White, Burgundy, Black, and Espresso Brown.
