Google has refreshed its iconic single-letter ‘G’ logo for the first time in nearly a decade, introducing a subtle yet significant update that aligns with its evolving design language and AI-driven future. The change maintains the original Product Sans font but replaces the flat, solid colour design with a new gradient look that offers more visual depth and polish.
What exactly has changed?
Earlier, the 'G' symbol used four different colors — red, yellow, green, and blue — in full blocks. The new version retains these essential colors but mixes them in a gradient, so transitions between the shades become smoother and more organic. The outcome is a more harmonious and elegant look that flows with current digital sensibilities.
The new logo was first seen on May 11, 2025, when the Google app on iOS was updated. Later, the same change was rolled out in the beta version (v16.8) of the Google app on Android as well. This change is, however, presently limited in nature — the new gradient 'G' appears only on iOS and Pixel smartphones, whereas the majority of other platforms, including web and non-Pixel Android devices, still display the original logo.

Google hasn't officially confirmed whether the complete six-letter "Google" wordmark will undergo the same overhaul or if this fresh style will roll out to other essential services such as Google Maps, Google Chrome, and YouTube. Regardless, this design could be the starting point of an extensive brand update throughout the company's apps and services line-up.
This change to gradient design seems to be following Google's consistent integration of AI into its products. As the increasing significance of Gemini — Google's generative AI assistant — already boasting a blue-to-purple gradient logo, the redesign falls in line with the company's future brand aesthetic.
The deployment of the new logo will roll out progressively to additional devices and platforms over the next few weeks, further solidifying Google's new visual identity for the AI age.
