Has Oppo just previewed the OnePlus Open 2 from the future?
A couple of days ago, Oppo revealed its latest flagship foldable to the Chinese market – the Find N5. Built from scratch as a phone designed to offset the very best from Samsung and Huawei, Oppo went after the practical aspects and refined the core formula. The Find N5 is almost as slim as a conventional slab phone when closed while not compromising on battery life, display, cameras and other crucial parameters.
Is this then the recipe for the OnePlus Open 2? After all, the first generation OnePlus Open was essentially an Oppo Find N3 with OnePlus badges pasted on its back!

Oppo’s weird marketing strategy for global markets leads to confusing product lineups. Ever since OnePlus was openly adopted as Oppo’s sidekick, Oppo has resorted to simple R&D efforts to minimise development costs and achieve a competitive advantage over rivals. OnePlus’ conventional flagships are basically Oppo phones without the outright ‘Chinese phone’ tag. A case in point is the OnePlus 13– a supremely decorated Snapdragon alternative to the MediaTek-powered Oppo Find X8 series.
For foldables though, Oppo settled for a simpler approach. For OnePlus’ first foldable phone, Oppo took its China-exclusive Find N3 and rebadged it as a OnePlus Open, complete with Google apps and lesser bloatware. For a first-generation phone, the Open sold well as a more affordable alternative to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold offering. The Open offered better cameras and novel multitasking implementations over its Korean rival.
Hence, with the Oppo Find N5, it only seems logical to see OnePlus borrowing the same handset with new badges and possibly new colours. Mind you, that’s not a bad decision considering Oppo makes great smartphones (don’t fret OnePlus PR teams, we aren’t attacking your brand. This is just logic!).

For its newest generation foldable, OnePlus…err…Oppo has made some crucial upgrades. The Find N5 is built around Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chip paired with 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512 GB of UFS 4.0 storage.
For its external display, Oppo is using a 6.62-inch FHD+ 120Hz OLED panel with 2160Hz PWM dimming – it will be comfortable on your eyes in a dark ambience. The internal display features an 8.12-inch 2K resolution OLED panel with a shallow crease, 120Hz LTPO OLED panel and up to 2,100 nits of peak brightness. There’s Ultra-Thin Glass for protection against nature’s elements too. Oppo bakes in IPX9 certification for protection against moisture but nothing against dust.
For cameras, the Find N5 relies on Hasselblad tuning for getting the most out of its rear combo of a 50-megapixel main sensor, 50-megapixel telephoto sensor and 8-megapixel ultrawide shooter – all of them featuring optical stablisation. For selfies and video calls, you get a decent 8-megapixel shooter on both the cover and main display.
The battery is where the Oppo shines! The Find N5 utilises a 5,600 mAh capacity Silicon Carbon battery chemistry – this allows Oppo to have a substantial battery while having a thickness of 8.93 mm when closed! Coupled with 80W wired fast charging, the Find N5 fills itself to the brim in approximately 50 minutes. You even get 50W wireless charging, provided you use Oppo’s wireless charger.
What will it cost?

In China, Oppo is selling the Find N5 with a starting price of CNY 8,999 (approximately INR 1.07 lakh). If you are unsatisfied with the base 12 GB/ 256 GB variant, you can consider the higher-tier 16 GB/512 GB variant for CNY 9,999 (approximately INR 1.18 lakh). A variant with 1 TB storage and 16 GB RAM costs CNY 10,999 (approximately INR 1.3 lakh).
OnePlus may incur additional costs in importing the device to India and hence, the Open 2 could command a premium over the Find N5 whenever it arrives in India.
