Google Search AI goes into panic mode!

In an age where your social media and search platforms need to have an A-game in AI, Google felt it was lagging behind. Perplexity did it first, followed by SearchGPT and now Google! A bit late to the party but Google can’t rush things – it is the default search engine for most people around the world! Google Search has been using AI for a while but mostly in a test phase, until now!

Google brings the power of Gemini 2.0 to the masses within the Search functionality in two separate flavours. For those seeking the familiarity of the old-school search engine layout, the AI Overview feature remains, albeit with a lot more intelligence than before. As for those who want an entirely new experience, Google brings a dedicated AI Mode as part of its experimental features to solve queries with answers instead of web links.

AI Overview now smarter

With Gemini 2.0, Google says that AI Overview will be a lot smarter than before. Google says that the new Gemini 2.0 model should be able to help with harder queries, such as help related to coding, advanced math and multimodal queries. The new model should also help with quicker resolutions, hoping to make AI Overview a lot more useful than before.

The Gemini 2.0-based AI Overview will be initially available in the US region and will be opened to teenage users too. Note that users will no longer need to sign in to their Google account to get going.

But Google wants you in AI Mode

With AI Mode, Google now wants to do the exact same thing as Perplexity – replace weblink listings with AI-generated responses. Google says that the AI Mode allows the Gemini 2.0 model to come up with more advanced reasoning, thinking and multimodal capabilities for complex questions. The responses will come up with answers in a language that can be comprehended by humans and for every claim, a hyperlink to the source article/story will be provided.

In essence, AI Mode is just like the Gemini chatbot with enhanced search capabilities. You will be able to ask follow-up questions in context to the previous questions. Google says that Gemini can create comparisons and use graphs to create a wholesome response, upon which further questions can be asked.

AI Mode will be accessible next to the ‘All’, ‘Images’ and ‘Videos’ tabs available under the search bar.

Will all this AI be enough for Google?

Regardless of whether Google decides to incorporate AI into its Search, Google Search remains the most used search engine across the world on all platforms. The addition of AI to the search functionality should help it make a tad easier for the younger generations seeking answers instead of having to waste time in manual searching.
