AI is the new buzzword in big tech and when one of them decides to step into another’s realm, the CEOs waste no time in taking a dig. Although they are mostly sarcastic in nature, it does provide a lot of social media engagement. And lots of spice for us to bank upon!
A case in point is Sam Altman’s latest post on X. Simply put, it is Altman’s basic reaction to a news piece that broke out with regard to Meta AI pursuing a dedicated app for its generative AI chatbot. Although Altman may have put up the post in a lighter mood, a slight streak of tension is evident. If X allowed for a facial expression recording while someone made the post, Sam would have given us great meme material!
Nonetheless, if what Sam said on his social media post holds an ounce of truth, the social media industry in general would witness a huge shakedown.
Sam Altman’s comment on Meta’s news: What and Why
Altman’s remarks were in reference to a news story talking about Meta’s plans for the Meta AI chatbot. Ever since generative AI chatbots became a thing, their creators have developed a dedicated app to allow easier and wider reach. Microsoft was the first one to make a move with its CoPilot app and soon after, the others followed. Google came up with the Gemini app (which was eventually integrated with Android phones) and OpenAI came up with the ChatGPT app.

Meta, however, took a different approach. Since Meta’s social platforms already had dedicated apps, Meta decided to make the Meta AI chatbot available via them. Hence, if you are on Instagram and seek some AI help, just swipe over to the DM section and tap the AI logo. Seeking a quick list of all the ingredients for vegetable stew while on a WhatsApp chat with your partner? Summon Meta AI via the logo on the top corner. Need help with a Facebook caption? Meta AI is there.
However, someone at Meta (probably Zuckerberg) figured out that you need a standalone app for your AI chatbot to enhance the recall value of your service. Meta AI’s shortcut in Meta’s social media apps relegates it to just a tool that many would simply forget. Also, it would be tricky to implement a paywall for new AI features within an app that’s basically free!
Hence, Meta now wants a standalone app for Meta AI to expand its AI business.
So why did Altman go all defensive?
lol if facebook tries to come at us and we just uno reverse them it would be so funny 🤣

Meta AI has evolved as a useful tool for creators and people seeking a quick resolution. The Llama AI model has proven its worth and despite its integration into Meta’s social platforms, people find it useful. A dedicated app for Meta AI that also packs several new features under a paid subscription plan spells trouble for OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which also has an app with premium features locked behind a paywall.
Will Altman do an AI-powered social media platform though?
Although it seems a far-fetched idea at this point in time, we aren’t discounting Altman’s capability to create a new social media platform that relies on ChatGPT’s prowess. Altman’s OpenAI is finessing the SearchGPT project as you read – an AI-powered search engine that aims to solve your queries rather than throwing multiple links.
Hence, don’t discount the possibility of a FaceGPT, or InstaGPT. Lol!
