Toyota and Maruti Suzuki have been sharing cars in the country for some time now. Toyota’s Innova Hycross is Maruti’s Invicto; Maruti’s Baleno is Toyota’s Glanza, and so on. Both car manufacturers build their vehicles and share the design.
Now, Toyota has officially confirmed the launch of a new car on April 3, 2024. Since August 2023, there were rumours Toyota launching a new car when the company registered Urban Cruiser Taisor trademark in India.
I do not expect this Urban Cruiser Taisor to receive any major build or design changes like other shared cars, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder/Maruti Grand Vitara, Maruti Baleno/Toyota Glanza, Maruti Ertiga/Toyota Rumion, etc.
In the interior, there might be some cosmetic changes like different upholstery materials and slightly different quality of plastic inside the cabin to change the look and feel as compared to Fronx.
We can expect redesigned bumpers, new alloy wheels, redesigned headlamps, LED DRLs, etc. There have always been differences in features offered in trims by Maruti and Toyota so we can expect a similar strategy to be followed here as well.
Engine and transmission options are going to be most probably the same as the Fronx. So we can expect Taisor to feature a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 90hp and 113Nm, coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission because this is the top-selling engine option of the Fronx. However, the 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine from the Fronx may not make it to the Taisor. Since the Fronx has a CNG option, it may come in the Taisor as well.
In 2022, Toyota discontinued the Brezza-based Urban Cruiser and they haven’t launched any sub-4meter SUV since then. Taisor is Expected to take that place and compete with Maruti Fronx, Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, etc. Its Pricing should be similar to the Fronx, so we can expect the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor pricing to start from anywhere between Rs 7.5 to 8 lakh (ex-showroom).
