As we reported earlier, the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) group is working to overhaul their respective lineup. Subsequently, the company will focus on a different set of clients.

One of the vehicles under that plan is the next-generation Land Rover Discovery. In the Discovery lineup, there are only two models - the Discovery Sport and Discovery. The former is positioned below the flagship Discovery version, plus both versions have different power figures and dimensions.

The current version is the third generation (codenamed L462), and this marked its debut in 2017.

Overview

The next-generation Land Rover Discovery will be given a unique identity, thereby allowing the company to create a unique set of buyers for the product. In addition, the new JLR Discovery SUV will revolve around being the “family adventure” product, and it will reportedly be offered in petrol, hybrid and electric.

Further, this strategic plan will give the Discovery SUV its own identity in the Discovery lineup, as the company wants to avoid this iteration from being overshadowed by the popular Defender SUV

That being said, the sales of the current version of the Discovery SUV have dwindled a lot, especially since the Defender’s debut. Therefore, the former has been one of the slowest-selling SUVs in the line-up, as only 16,750 units were globally sold in 2023. In contrast, JLR dispatched 1,10,367 units of the Defender globally in the same period.

Besides that, it is speculated that the next-generation Discovery could get MPV-like design cues, thereby making it a potential competitor of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. As indicated above, the Discovery will be a standalone brand like Jaguar, Range Rover and Defender.

It is also worth mentioning that the upcoming Discovery will be underpinned by the protean MLA platform, which also underpins the flagship Range Rover and is designed to house petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric configurations. In addition, JLR has confirmed that it will actively move towards electrified Land Rovers by 2026, and reportedly, the Discovery 6 will be one of them.

In fact, the Discovery SUV will also have its performance-centric version, as the Defender’s Octa model.

However, the launch timeline of the next generation Defender remains to be seen, but we expect the new lineup to mark the global unveiling in 2025.
