The international-spec of the Jeep Compass has received a more powerful 2.0-litre,four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol unit. It’s worth noting that this engine is not new. It can be found powering the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. As per sources, this powerful petrol unit will also power the international spec of the Jeep Commander, which is marketed as the Jeep Meridian in India.

Interestingly, this 2.0-litre engine has also shown value by powering some Maserati and Alfa Romeo. This unit is derived from FCA’s Global Medium Engine (GME) division.

Will the Jeep Compass have it in India?

The American automobile manufacturer doesn’t offer this more powerful 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in India, as far as the Jeep Compass is concerned. This meaty engine pumps out 268bhp and 400Nm of peak torque. It is, however, uncertain if Jeep India gets the same engine for the Compass, albeit the Indian division is planning to revive the long-gone Compass petrol.

As for the revival of the Jeep Compass petrol, some sources have stated that the Jeep Compass petrol may get a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol instead, which will pump out 185bhp, and may power the Jeep Meridian, too, once the 1.3-litre engine is introduced. However, as of now, the Jeep Meridian will first come back in a facelifted iteration in 2024. And later, it may have its powertrain changed.

What offerings does the Jeep Compass currently have?

The latest update is that the Jeep Compass recently received a Night Eagle Edition in India. The current iteration, the Jeep Compass facelift, was launched in 2021. As of April 2024, the Jeep Compass is solely powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, which pumps out 167.67bhp at 3700rpm and 350Nm of torque at 2500rpm. This diesel engine has a standard six-speed manual unit and an optional nine-speed automatic transmission.

Lastly, this SUV can be had with a standard front-wheel drive (4x2) and an optional four-wheel drive (4x4).

Who are the rivals of the Jeep Compass?

The Jeep Compass goes against the Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Tata Harrier, Citroen C5 Aircross, Mahindra XUV700, and Hyundai Tucson.
