Maruti will be stepping into the electric era in 2025 with the e Vitara SUV and it seems preparations are underway for a grand launch in India. The e Vitara in its finalised version will be showcased to the public at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 in Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam in mid-January and ahead of the event, Maruti Suzuki is busy road testing the e Vitara prototype.

Luckily for us, we spotted one of them plying on the road and since it was stuck in Gurugram’s crawling traffic congestion, we managed to get a good look at it. Sadly though, it was on an unlit section of the Delhi Jaipur highway and we couldn’t catch a proper glimpse of the bodywork, which was aggravated by the black body wrap. While most people passed it off as an unknown prototype vehicle, our enthusiastic eyes identified it as Suzuki’s next big offering.

Although the Suzuki e Vitara is no longer officially hidden, Maruti Suzuki will keep things under wrap until an official launch. The e Vitara in its press renders looks like a refined version of the Grand Vitara SUV with more cladding and butch styling elements.

In the flesh though, the e Vitara looks more muscular than its petrol-powered sibling. From the rear, the vehicle has a substantial road presence, especially with its compact LED taillamps. It is certainly not as exciting to look at as the latest iteration of the Hyundai Creta but given Maruti’s conservative designs, the e Vitara looks bulky.

The unique side profile with the kink in the windowline and masked rear door handles make the e Vitara look more rugged. The Y-shaped LED DRL looks interesting and the high bonnetline only adds to the SUV’s overall appeal.

I even managed to peek inside the cabin and caught a glimpse of Suzuki’s 9-inch infotainment system. Sadly, the rest of the interior trim was all covered.

Unlike most electric SUVs in the affordable segments, the e Vitara will be available in both 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. The front-wheel drive variant utilising the 49 kWh motor makes 142 hp of peak power and 189 Nm of peak torque whereas the 61 kWh variant dials up the power to 172 hp.

The ALLGRIP-e four-wheel drive system variant’s powertrain makes 181 hp of peak power and 300 Nm of peak torque. Although Suzuki hasn’t officially shared the range figures, the e Vitara is speculated to offer up to 500 km of range on a fully charged battery.

Since Suzuki and Toyota develop vehicles in partnership, a version of the e Vitara will wear the Toyota badge on the nose, feature new bodywork and a new name tag – Toyota Urban SUV.

The Maruti e Vitara, however, is likely to be more pocket-friendly and compete with the recently announced Mahindra BE 6 electric SUV
