The Tata Nexon has been a runaway hit ever since its introduction to the Indian market in 2017. Built on the X1 platform that underpinned the Indica Vista, the Nexon prioritised three key aspects that Indians wanted from a ‘desi’ compact SUV – trendy design, comfortable ride and a feature-rich cabin. Tata Motors has updated the Nexon twice, refining the engine tuning as well as updating the feature list over the years. With a trendy new front fascia, the present day’s Nexon commands attention unlike anything!
So what will Tata Motors change with the Nexon’s next update? More crucially, what will the Nexon’s next generational upgrade bring to the table? Quite a lot, as the leaks suggest. However, there’s a big surprise awaiting everyone willing to upgrade to the Nexon’s next iteration.
Rumours about the Nexon’s second generational upgrade have been in the air for a while and based on a report from Autocar India, the new Nexon’s arrival is slated to happen in 2027. While new Nexons are a frequent occurrence in the Indian auto market, the 2027 variant will be addressed as the second-generation model.
Wait, 2nd generation in 2027? Wasn’t the 2023 model…
Contrary to popular belief, the Nexon has practically remained in its first-generation form since 2017. The 2019 model was essentially a facelift and the same can be said for the 2023 model. Unlike other brands, Tata Motors has used every model year to bring in improvements and upgrades to the core areas. The 2023 model was an extensive facelift with a lot more features and goodies along with refined engines and gearboxes.
However, for the 2027 model, Tata Motors is working extensively on the platform, thus qualifying it as a second-generation model. Based on the rumours, the Nexon 2nd Gen will be based on a highly modified X1 platform. The changes will primarily include structural changes to the chassis and body. The design is also said to have changed drastically, with changes more akin to the newer Tata models.
Will the Nexon look like a baby Sierra? Fingers crossed!
While not much is said about the features and the rest of the vehicle, we expect Tata Motors to fettle the existing powertrains for refinement and superior range. Owing to regulatory norms, Tata might drop the diesel engine option from the lineup and stick to petrol, CNG and electric powertrains. The electric variants could rely on Punch.ev’s Acti.EV platform, thereby offering superior ride dynamics. While sunroofs might be carried over from the present-day models, Tata Motors could focus on improved connected in-car tech and more upmarket electronic features.
What remains to be seen is whether the reworked platform allows for more space for the rear passenger.
