At this point, the sudden surge of pollution in the NCR region during the onset of the winter season has now become an annual tradition. To tackle this hazardous situation, the Delhi government keeps imposing a ban on older polluting vehicles. While this is good for the environment, it is inconvenient for BS4 vehicle owners.

Last year, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) imposed a ban on all BS4 vehicles in Delhi under Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This ban was imposed in Delhi from December 22, 2023, to January 18, 2024.

Currently, the pollution levels have started rising in the Delhi NCR region again and that raises the question: are BS4 vehicles banned similar to last year? The answer to this question is not as simple as it seems as the authorities are yet to make public announcements.

However, we believe that if the pollution reaches last year’s levels, then the authorities might impose the ban again.

What is the BS4 vehicle emission standard?

BS (Bharat Stage) norms are emission standards to regulate the emission of all the vehicles sold by all the manufacturers across India. The BS4 standard came into force nationwide in the year 2017. It was based on the Euro IV standard and set the maximum limit of NO (Nitrogen Oxide) emission to 80mg/kg for petrol vehicles and 250mg/kg for diesel vehicles.

The BS4 emission standard also introduced AHO (Automatic Headlamp On) for enhanced road safety. It was replaced with better and stricter BS6 norms, which were implemented from April 1, 2020.

Currently, there is no ban on BS4 vehicles. However, all petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years are banned from plying in the region.

It is crucial to check all the updates from the authorities before taking your vehicle out on the roads in Delhi. Since the pollution levels are rising rapidly, the authorities might impose a ban if the AQI worsens.

How to check if your vehicle is BS4 or BS6

If you recently got a preowned car or have been driving your existing car for over six years or more, you should check whether the vehicle is BS4 or BS6 compliant. Follow any of these simple methods to check the emission standard of your vehicle easily:

Method 1: Check Your RC

Any vehicle sold in the country gets a registration certificate (RC). This document consists of all the necessary information about your vehicle. For most cars, the emission standard of the vehicle is clubbed with the car’s model name. For example, if you drive a Mahindra Bolero, the model section in RC will mention something like, ‘Mahindra Bolero SLX BS4’.

Method 2: Check Form 21

Form 21, also known as a car sale certificate, is a mandatory legal document for the registration of any car. It is filled up by the seller with all the information regarding the vehicle and its buyer, which is then sent to the respective RTO for registration. The emission standard information about any vehicle can easily be found on Form 21.

Method 3: Check Manufacturing Date

You can check the manufacturing date of the vehicle on both the abovementioned documents and then figure out if your vehicle is BS4 or BS6. The BS6 emission standard was introduced in 2020. If your vehicle was manufactured in 2019 or before, it is most likely a BS4-compliant vehicle.

What to do if you own a BS4 vehicle in Delhi/NCR

Since there is no ban on the BS4 vehicles presently, you can drive them without restriction in the Delhi/NCR region.

However, if the authorities impose a ban on BS4 vehicles, you should avoid taking yours out on the roads to avoid penalties/challan. You could use cab services or other public transport mediums to help lower the pollution levels.

That said, the bans have been mostly limited to the winter season and that too for BS4 diesel vehicles. BS4 petrol vehicles have been exempt from the ban so far. Once the winds start to blow over the North Indian region, the ban is removed and owners should be able to take their BS4 diesel vehicles out and roam freely.
