Meet the Vespa that’s more powerful than your Royal Enfield Classic 350! Yeah, no kidding!
The Vespa has been around for years as a cutesy retro scooter with a range of commute-friendly reliable engines. But Piaggio wanted to do more. With performance-centric maxi scooters getting more popular, Piaggio has gone for the classic muscle-car way – putting a bigger 310cc engine in the humble Vespa’s engine bay. The result is a mighty powerful scooter that can now compete with most 300cc motorcycles.

Vespa GTS 310: Why this could make scooters interesting again
The GTS badge has mostly been reserved for vehicles that focus a lot on the performance and Piaggio is doing the same.
The key highlight of the Vespa GTS 310 is the new 310cc liquid-cooled long-stroke engine that produces 25 bhp of power and 27.52 Nm of torque. This powerplant can propel the Vespa to a top speed of 130 kph. This engine, which is based on the older 278cc high-performance engine, gets a new ECU and electric fuel injector to make it compliant with Euro 5+ emission norms.
Since the power is relatively higher for an automatic scooter, Piaggio has given basic safety features like traction and ABS as the standard safety net. You also get a semi-digital instrument cluster fused with some retro elements like an analogue speedometer. The seat is also comfortable.

Does it look any different?
Compared to the regular 125cc Vespa, the 310cc Vespa distinguishes itself with retro-styled air cooling vents on the engine cover and black accents on the edges of the panels. Piaggio is offering this Vespa in regular, GTS Super and GTS Supersport trims, with the latter variants offering body graphics and chic colours.
Vespa GTS 310: Will it come to India?
For the time being, the answer is negative. However, if Piaggio managed to launch the unique Vespa 946 Dragon at an exorbitant price of INR 14.2 lakhs, we can expect to see the Vespa 310 coming in a few years to compete with the Yamaha Aerox 155.
Until the 'super Vespa' arrives, you can consider the existing lineup of the Vespa commute-friendly scooters. The Vespa Classic ZX125 starts at INR 115,414 and goes up INR 129,532 for the top-end VXL 125 variant. For those seeking a bigger engine, the Vespa Classic VXL 150 comes in at a price of INR 142,994.
