The Honda Activa might be going electric! That too in November!
The Activa is the darling of India’s two-wheeler segment and after holding out for what seemed like an eternity, Honda’s two-wheeler division is now ready to electrify it.
Rumours of a Honda electric scooter wearing the legendary Activa badge have been doing rounds of the internet for a while. With rival brands like Ola Electric, Chetak and Ather making great strides in terms of technology and pricing, Honda thinks that now is probably the right time for the brand to exercise its expertise in this segment.
An electric Activa has been perceived as a flash point for the electric scooter category. The Activa’s domination of the sales charts in the petrol scooter industry hints at a rerun of the fate in the EV segment. With a launch now confirmed later this month, we no longer need to wait to find out whether the Activa Electric decimates the behemoth, which is Ola Electric’s S1 scooter range.

In an invitation to the press, Honda’s two-wheeler division has confirmed launching an electric vehicle in India. Although the name hasn’t been revealed yet, the announcement comes on the heels of Honda showing the CUV e electric scooter concept at EICMA that’s close to being production-ready.
“Join us as we unveil the next era of mobility. A transformation is on the horizon and we’re excited to share it with you,” says the presser. The “Watts Ahead” tag hints at this product being an electric vehicle.
Since the Activa badge holds a lot of value in the Indian market, rumours hint at the scooter being called the Honda Activa Electric or Honda Activa E to give this electric scooter a shot at setting the sales charts on fire (and hopefully not the scooter itself).
Would Honda call it the Activa EG? We hope not.
Honda Activa Electric speculations and leaks
If the CUV e from the UK is to be considered as the basis of the Activa Electric, Honda may not have a dead formula on arrival. The CUV e features a removable battery setup similar to the Vida V1 scooter from Hero. While the removable batteries could help riders recharge the battery more conveniently, the layout eats up the underseat storage space. That's very unlike an Activa!

Hence, there’s a possibility that the Activa Electric could be based on a different platform. Rumours suggest that Honda utilised its existing petrol Activa platform to incorporate an electric drivetrain. This would not only save on costs but also the research and development time. This path was chosen to fend off the threat from newcomers like Ola Electric and Ather as soon as possible.
The electric Activa could stick to the concept of fixed batteries tucked in the footboard while accommodating the drive motor in the rear section. This setup should offer a usable under-seat boot space. Honda could also offer an upgraded digital instrumentation on the dashboard to allow riders to gain control over the various driving and regenerative modes.
As far as the range and performance are concerned, the Activa Electric could offer a familiar performance profile as the 110CC Activa petrol and may be good for 100 km on a fully charged battery.
