Since iPhone 12, Apple has been launching its iPhone models with OLED screens; however, the same is different with the iPhone SE series. The Cupertino-based tech giant has been launching iPhone SE models with LCD displays. According to a report by Japan's Nikkei newspaper, Apple is planning to use OLED displays on all its upcoming iPhone models. Apple will ditch LCDs and only sell OLED iPhones from next year i.e. 2025.
Apple is Ditching LCDs and Shifting to OLED Completely
Both manufacturers and consumers prefer OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) displays as they can portray colour more accurately than LCD (Liquid-Crystal Display) panels. OLED displays are ideal for content consumption and are more power-efficient compared to LCDs.
A report published in Nikkei highlights that Apple has excluded Japanese display makers like Sharp Corp and Japan Display, instead placing orders with South Korean giant LG and Chinese display manufacturer BOE.
Previously, the LCDs used in Apple’s iPhones were supplied by Sharp Corp and Japan Display. These Japanese suppliers had been providing LCDs for the Apple iPhone SE until recently, but this has ceased due to their lack of OLED production.
Apple had been using LCDs across all iPhone models before the iPhone X. After the switch in 2017, Apple began integrating OLED displays into all its top-tier iPhone models. These OLED displays are flexible, lightweight, and very thin, making them easier for brands to work with.

In addition to iPhones, Apple has also launched iPads with OLED displays, which are widely used for gaming, content consumption, and creative work.
While OLED displays offer many advantages over LCDs, they come with certain challenges. For instance, if an OLED screen is damaged, the replacement cost is significantly higher than that of an LCD. Another drawback is that the lifespan of OLED displays is shorter compared to LEDs.
