Let’s be honest – Instagram’s video editing tools are sort of crap! In a world where everyone is willing to put up Reels for whatever reason one imagines, the native app only offers basic editing tools – all of which are cumbersome to use. The final renders often turn up messy, especially when there are a lot of changes for the app to handle.
It seems Instagram’s developers knew this too. Instead of fixing the issues and adding a couple of new features, they have now rolled out a new app for content creators. It’s called Instagram Edits and yes, we are wondering why they couldn’t fuse all of its features into the main app! Remember the Threads messaging app, which was eventually dissolved into the main app’s DM section? Threads eventually became another app, offering a new alternative to X.
Nonetheless, Instagram Cuts is here to stay for the time being and could be a good option for content creators on the go for doing basic editing and pushing the videos live on instantly.
Here’s a little more about Meta’s newest app.

Instagram Edits: Goodbye VN, Canva?
Not yet! As promising as Edits seems at the moment, apps like VN and Canva offer a lot more professional tools for fettling with vertically oriented videos.
Instagram Edits, however, seems to be a good starting point for new creators who have to take care of the entire production process.
With Edits, you can record footage from within the app and unlike Instagram, you can choose the resolution and frame rate. You can even choose the option to record in SDR or HDR!
Once the footage is ready, Edits offers a multitude of editing tools like video overlays, green screen, auto caption generator, stickers, voiceover, background audio score and more. You get an ‘edit-friendly’ timeline layout with individual layers for video footage, voiceovers, audio background score and text ribbons.
Surprisingly, the app lacks AI edit tools that most other video editors offer. Given that Meta AI is already accessible on the main Instagram app, this seems like a letdown.
Since its part of Meta’s Instagram universe, the app provides live insights on viewer engagement and reach if you directly export it on your Insta feed.

When and where to download?
Edits will be available for iOS users to download via the App Store from mid-March 2025. Android users, however, will need to wait a tad longer.
