Rockstar Games has officially pushed the launch date of Grand Theft Auto VI back to May 26, 2026. The game had been originally scheduled for a fall 2025 release. As per a developer statement, the delay is being done to maintain the high level of quality the players expect.
In a message posted on Rockstar's website, the team apologized for the delay and thanked fans for their ongoing support. "We are very sorry that this is later than you expected," reads the statement. "The interest and excitement in a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for all of us on the team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience while we work to complete the game."
What was the announcement for?
The announcement highlighted Rockstar's dedication to going above and beyond player expectations, something that it has endeavored to do with every previous release. The creators repeated that GTA VI is not an exception and provided further updates down the road.

The title was originally unveiled during December of 2023 through an official trailer, but information has been limited since then. What is known is that GTA VI will be set in a contemporary Vice City, a location not seen in the series since Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It will also feature a significant change of direction for the franchise, as it debuts its first female protagonist, Lucia. The game is said to be inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, with that reportedly promising a partnership-centered and crime-themed narrative.
The announcement of the delay has had its economic impact. Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive's stock lost 8 percent in premarket trading on NASDAQ on news of the delay. Now, investors and analysts are eyeing Take-Two's second-quarter earnings call later this month on May 15, where they may release additional information about the delay as well as any advancements in the development of the game.
GTA VI is already popular before its launch
Although more than a decade old, Grand Theft Auto V continues to be immensely popular. As of 2024, it regained Twitch's top position as the most streamed game, pointing to the strength of the franchise and fan support.
Gamers will have to wait for a year longer to see GTA VI, but they can be reassured by Rockstar that it will utilize that time to craft an experience worth the legacy of the franchise.
