‘Google Vids’, the latest addition to Google’s Workspace software lineup, is a video editing tool. Like every other software launching these days, Google too, has taken out an AI-powered video editor. This isn’t your regular fancy video editing software. Google defines Vids as, "an all-in-one video creation app for work that will sit alongside Docs, Sheets and Slides."

What is Google Vids and how will it work?

This tool is not meant to edit films or multilayer YouTube (YT) videos- it can be used to create simple presentations, training videos, etc., for work. The promotional video (link below) shows a sales training video made on Google Vids by Google. First of all, a slideshow has been created and then an existing template has been chosen from the existing video style templates. Then comes the scripting part which can either be done manually or by using speech to text method, background music was added from the library and then the video was shared for feedback with other people.

By the way, Google says, the creator also has a collaboration option on Google Vids. As the name indicates, the invited people from the creator can work and have a real-time chat while working on a project.

The users can create a script, collect all the clips and images to be used in the video and storyboard, and then manually create a timeline in the Google Vids. Since this software is AI-powered, users can also ask Google Gemini to make a script and generate images to be used in the video, and then the Google Vids will do its magic by simply creating a first draft based on the user’s prompt. The Google Vids app has a large collection of audio and video samples in its library which users can use in their videos, as needed.

Google has said this is an AI-powered video editor, but, there are no fancy features like OpenAI’s Sora which recently has been making the buzz around the globe with its extraordinary AI video generation capabilities.

Google Vids is a simple video editing tool with a few AI features of Gemini like script writing and image generation. Let’s see how good or bad this turns out when the software goes public for beta testing in June 2024.
