OpenAI has rolled out a new age prediction and verification system in ChatGPT to enhance online safety for young users. The update aims to automatically detect whether a user is under 18 and apply additional safety settings to restrict access to sensitive or inappropriate content. The company said the system is being gradually introduced across global markets to create a safer and more age-appropriate AI experience. Users can also manually verify their actual age if the system classifies them incorrectly.

What the Age Prediction Feature Does

According to OpenAI, the new age prediction feature ensures that younger users receive moderated responses and limited access to certain topics. The system also allows adults to confirm their identity through a secure verification process managed by a third-party partner called Persona.

OpenAI has said the process is fully encrypted and the company does not store users’ ID details. Once the verification is complete, ChatGPT updates the user’s experience based on their confirmed age.

What You May Need to Provide

Depending on your country, the user would be requested one or both of the following for age verification:

  • Live selfie: Capture a real-time photo of your face using your phone or webcam.
  • Government-issued ID: Upload a valid identity document. This includes a passport, driving licence or national ID card. Persona will verify your date of birth and ensure your selfie matches the ID photo. The accepted forms of identification may differ from one country to another.

Moreover, the age prediction feature is expected to complement upcoming tools like “Adult Mode,” which will offer a more personalised experience for verified users above 18. This mode is likely to roll out later in 2026.
