During a recent livestream event in Japan, Toyota pulled the covers off several eye-catching concepts — including a Century Coupe and even a 6-wheeled Lexus minivan. But the real showstopper was the reveal of the Next-Generation Corolla concept, hinting at a dramatic evolution for one of the world’s most iconic cars.
A Fresh, Futuristic Design
The Corolla has always been known for its conservative styling, but this new concept takes things in a completely different direction. While still technically a “concept,” details like production-ready door mirrors and handles suggest this design is very close to what could actually make it to showrooms.
Standout design elements include a pixel-style connected LED DRL strip, boomerang-shaped upper DRLs, and vertical headlamps at the front. The sides showcase pronounced rear haunches, a short bonnet, and a sloping beltline, all flowing into an integrated ducktail spoiler. The result is a bold, futuristic look that feels worlds apart from the Corolla we’ve known for decades.
Powertrain Possibilities
A charging port flap on the front left fender strongly suggests this concept is an all-electric vehicle. While a plug-in hybrid could be on the table, Toyota already has the Prius covering that space — making it more likely that this new Corolla will be a dedicated EV.
That said, given the Corolla’s reputation as the best-selling car in history, Toyota may not risk going EV-only right away. Industry speculation hints at two possibilities: either offering both EV and ICE versions with near-identical looks, or keeping this bold futuristic styling exclusive to the electric variant while giving the petrol model a more traditional design.
What About the Interior?
Toyota hasn’t revealed the cabin just yet, but expectations are high. A complete interior overhaul is likely in order, matching the futuristic flair of the exterior.
When Will We See It?
The wait might not be too long. Toyota is expected to showcase the Next-Gen Corolla EV concept at the upcoming 2025 Japan Mobility Show, kicking off on October 29.
With this bold new design and an all-electric direction, Toyota is clearly positioning the Corolla for the next era of mobility — without forgetting its massive global fanbase.
