If you have shortlisted the Tata Altroz and Hyundai i20 but want something sportier, in terms of looks and performance, the Altroz Racer or i20 N-Line can be considered. These two hot hatchbacks can meet your adrenaline needs under Rs 15 lakh. 

Tata Motors has put a price tag on the Altroz of Rs 9.49 lakh, which goes up to Rs 10.99 lakh. These are introductory ex-showroom prices. In contrast, the Hyundai i20 N-Line’s price starts at Rs 9.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 12.52 lakh. Both are ex-showroom figures. 

Specifications

Both the Tata Altroz Racer and Hyundai i20 N-Line are exclusively powered by a turbocharged petrol engine with more or less the same engine output. The former offering is limited to the manual transmission, while the latter is available in manual and automatic transmissions. 

2024 Hyundai i20 N-Line

As for the 2024 Altroz Racer, this homegrown hatchback has a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, Nexon-derived turbocharged petrol engine, which is tuned to churn out 118.35bhp at 5500rpm and 170Nm of peak torque between 1750-4000rpm. This engine is exclusive to the six-speed manual transmission. 

Tata Altroz Racer

In contrast, the i20 N-Line is powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine, which has an output of 118.41bhp at 6000rpm and 172Nm of peak torque between 1500-4000rpm. This is the only iteration in this comparison available in six-speed manual and seven-speed (DCT) automatic transmissions. 

As you can see, both have marginal differences, as far as the power is concerned, plus both models have a front-wheel-drive system. 

Besides that, the sportier version of the Altroz stands on an independent MacPherson dual path strut with coil spring at the front and twist beam with coil spring and shock absorber at the rear. The braking duties are taken care of by disc-drum brakes. Additionally, this iteration has a tyre profile of 185/60 R16. 

On the other hand, the Korean hatchback has a McPherson Strut at the front and a coupled torsion beam axle at the rear. Besides that, the i20 N-Line has disc brakes on all corners. Another notable highlight is that this vehicle has wider tyres, measuring 195/55 R16. 

Dimensions

The Hyundai i20 N-Line is surprisingly bigger than the Altroz Racer in dimensions except for the height.

The former measures 3995mm in length, 1775mm in width, and 2580mm in wheelbase, while the latter measures 3990mm in length, 1755mm in width, and 2501mm in wheelbase. The Altroz has a height of 1523mm, while its counterpart’s height measures 1505mm.

Additionally, the i20 N-Line has a better ground clearance of 170mm, while its counterpart’s ground clearance is 165mm.

As for the boot space, the Altroz has a capacity rated at 345 litres, while the i20 N-line has a boot space of 311 litres.   

Features

In the feature department also, both vehicles have a long list of offerings. But, let’s begin with the exclusive features of the Hyundai i20 N-Line that are not present in its counterpart. 

So, the N-Line variant of the i20 boasts an auto-dimming IRVM, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, artificial leather upholstery with black and red inserts, electrically adjustable and retractable ORVMs, and N-Line specific body kit with a chrome finished exhaust tip.

There are also LED projector headlamps with LED DRLs, LED tail lamps, ambient lighting, puddle lamps, and a fully digital instrument cluster. In addition, it has a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (wired). 

In contrast, the Altroz Racer has brake assist, umbrella storage in the door, a vanity mirror for co-passenger, a leatherette upholstery with a dual-tone scheme, front ventilated seats (cooling only), an auto folding ORVM, and rain-sensing wipers. It also has halogen-projector headlights with LED DRLs, active cornering lights, footwell lamps, a glovebox lamp, and a semi-digital instrument cluster (analogue tachometer). This vehicle also has a touchscreen infotainment unit of 10.24 inches (an inch smaller than the i20’s) with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

As for the common features, both have a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, a wireless charger, USB ports, voice command, an adjustable cluster brightness, a headlight height adjuster, automatic headlamps, power windows (front/rear), and a cooled glove box. They also have a driver’s armrest, foldable bench seats, connected car technology, cruise control, keyless start/button start, an auto HVAC, and cabin-to-boot access.

On the safety front, both offerings have a speed-sensing door lock, child safety lock, traction control, ESP, ABS with EBD, a tyre pressure monitoring system, six airbags, seat belt warnings, and child-seat anchorages. 

Pricing

The Hyundai i20 N-Line is priced slightly higher than the Tata Altroz Racer, as the former has a starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh, while the latter’s price starts from Rs 9.49 lakh. 

However, the similarly priced vehicles include the Hyundai Exter, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, Maruti Suzuki’s Fronx and Taisor, to name a few.
