We have reported earlier that the Volkswagen-owned company, Skoda, plans to make a foray into the sub-four-metre SUV market in India. Yes, you read that right.
It will be called the Skoda Kylaq.
This vehicle will be the all-new offering from the Czech automobile manufacturer under its ‘India 2.5’ project, and it will mark its global debut on November 6, 2024. Additionally, its India launch is set to take place in early 2025.
Overview
The Skoda Kylaq sub-four-metre SUV is likely to have many design cues as its larger siblings - the Kushaq and Kodiaq. According to some spy shots and teasers, the new Kylaq SUV is deemed to have Skoda’s signature butterfly grille and side window line, similar to the Kushaq SUV.
The front fascia of the Kylaq houses a new LED lighting setup in which the headlights are positioned underneath the sleek LED DRLs. In parallel, the rear end of this SUV has inverted L-shaped LED lights.
Furthermore, it is deemed to have roof rails, turn indicators on ORVMs, body cladding, and a distinctive set of alloy wheels.
Now, as far as the interior and features are concerned, the Skoda’s sub-four-metre SUV is likely to get a single-pane sunroof, electric ORVMs, power windows, a 2-spoke multifunction steering wheel, auto HVAC, ambient lighting, connected car technology, etc.
Other expected offerings include a floating touchscreen infotainment unit (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), a digital instrument cluster, a wireless phone charger, a rear parking camera with parking sensors, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, and traction control, among others.
Keeping that aside, this upcoming Skoda subcompact SUV is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre (999cc) three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (TSI), which belts out 114bhp at 5000rpm and 178Nm of peak torque at 1750rpm. The same engine powers Skoda’s Kushaq/Slavia and Volkswagen’s Taigun/Virtus.
This engine is expected to be paired with manual and automatic transmissions.
Market Positioning
Once launched early next year, the Skoda Kylaq sub-compact SUV will take the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Nexon, and Hyundai Venue, among others. It will also rival the Toyota Taisor and Maruti Suzuki Fronx.
