If you have a budget of INR 8 lakh and want the best car for your money, do not worry, we have your back. Our story compares two of the best value-for-money cars on the market currently: the legendary Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the newly launched German SUV, the Skoda Kylaq.

Why did we choose these two cars under the INR 8 lakh budget? Well, the Dzire has been the go-to car under an INR 10 lakh budget since its inception. Recently the car also received a five-star crashworthiness rating, which now makes it a no-brainer for many people. Hence this is on our list.

The Skoda Kylaq has been chosen because this is the entry-level German SUV that is not only feature-loaded but has also proven its safety parameters, thanks to the recent five-star crashworthiness ratings from the BNCAP. Another reason for adding Kylaq is the fever of SUVs is at its peak in India and no matter what budget you have, you can get an SUV in that. And from what we are seeing, the Kylaq seems to be the ultimate SUV under the budget of INR 8 lakh.

Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Dzire vs Skoda Kylaq

The Skoda Kylaq Classic variant, with a starting price of INR 7.89 lakh (ex-showroom), boasts a 1.0-litre TSI engine. This three-cylinder turbocharged motor generates an impressive 114 bhp of peak power and 178 Nm of peak torque. This powerful engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission in the Classic variant of the Kylaq whereas its higher variants also get a convenient Torque Convertor automatic gearbox for a convenient driving experience. The Kylaq's stylish design and higher ground clearance of 189 mm make it suitable for both city driving and rough terrains.

On the other hand, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire Vxi, priced at INR 7.79 lakh (ex-showroom), comes with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine producing 80 bhp of peak power and 111.7 Nm of peak torque. While it may not be as powerful as the Kylaq, the Dzire shines with its excellent fuel efficiency of 24.79 km/l, making it ideal for long commutes and city driving. The Dzire Vxi is offered with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT.

The Skoda Kylaq boasts a ground clearance of 189 mm while the Maruti Suzuki Dzire offers a ground clearance of 163 mm. Given the often challenging road conditions in India, with numerous speed bumps, potholes and rough terrain, the higher ground clearance of the Skoda Kylaq makes it more practical and suitable for Indian roads. The extra height provides better underbody protection and makes it easier to navigate obstacles without damaging the car.

Interior features

The Classic variant of the Kylaq focuses on providing essential features while maintaining a premium feel. However, it lacks any kind of infotainment system which is a bummer at this price point. The brand should have offered a basic infotainment system here. Kylaq’s higher trims offer additional luxury features like a sunroof, touchscreen infotainment, and automatic climate control but these also cost a lot more.

In contrast, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire Vxi offers a more practical and straightforward interior. The 7-inch touchscreen display is functional and user-friendly, providing Bluetooth connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Steering-mounted audio controls make it easy to manage your music and calls without taking your hands off the wheel. The manual air conditioning with front and rear AC vents ensures everyone stays cool, even on the hottest days.

The Kylaq offers a larger boot space of 446 litres, compared to the Dzire's 382 litres, making it more practical for longer trips or carrying more luggage.

Safety

In terms of safety, both cars come equipped with six airbags, ABS with EBD and ESP. The Dzire also gets hill hold assist and many more safety features that are missing on the base Classic variant of the Kylaq.

While the Skoda Kylaq Classic Variant impresses with its powerful performance and rugged design, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire Vxi stands out for its affordability, fuel efficiency and practicality. The choice between these two cars ultimately depends on what you prioritise more - the thrill of driving a more powerful vehicle or the cost-effectiveness and ease of city driving.

Conclusion

We so want to choose the Skoda Kylaq as the winner of this comparison because this car is a mini version of the Kushaq. It borrows its engine and chassis from the Kushaq and that car has proven itself to be a great compact SUV with German sophistication at an entry-level pricing.

However, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire Vxi shines in terms of fuel efficiency and affordability. Its 1.2-litre engine, coupled with an impressive mileage of 24.79 km/l, makes it an ideal option for budget-conscious buyers who prioritise maximum efficiency and practicality in daily commutes. It also has an edge with its feature-loaded interiors and additional features such as hill hold assist.

Ultimately, the choice between the two depends on individual preferences. If you seek a powerful and fun-to-drive car, the Skoda Kylaq Classic is the way to go. However, if fuel efficiency and cost-effectiveness are your top priorities, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire Vxi is a great choice. Both cars offer unique strengths, catering to different needs and lifestyles.
