Volkswagen India has now made the Virtus (sedan) and Taigun (SUV) even safer by making six airbags as standard. Earlier, the lower variants of these two vehicles had dual airbags, while the top variants had six airbags.

Sharing his opinion in this regard, Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, said, “Today, we take great pride in announcing our portfolio of India 2.0 cars offering 6 airbags as standard across the line-up. With this, not only are we showcasing our commitment towards safer mobility but also reaffirming our core belief of safety being a key product pillar for Volkswagen India.”

Speaking of safety, the MQB-A0-IN-based vehicles, such as Volkswagen’s Taigun/Virtus, and Skoda’s Kushaq/Slavia are among the safest cars in India, as they scored a five-star safety rating at the Global NCAP crash test.

Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun: Safety Features

As mentioned, the Volkswagen Virtus sedan and Taigun SUV now offer six airbags as standard on all variants. Other safety features on board include ABS with EBD, child-safety locks, brake assist, anti-glare IRVM, tyre pressure monitor, engine immobiliser, ESC, multi-collision brakes (MCB), anti-slip regulation (ASR), etc.

They also have a rear camera with guidelines, speed alert at 80kmph, speed-sensing door lock, ISOFIX child-seat anchorages, pre-tensioners and force limiter seatbelts, and hill-assist, to name a few.

Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun: Powertrains

Both vehicles are based on the MQB-A0-IN platform and share the same 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol (called TSI by Volkswagen) engines. In addition to that, they both have the same type of manual and automatic transmissions.

The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 147.51bhp between 5000-6000rpm and 250Nm of peak torque between 1600-3500rpm. On the other hand, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit generates 113.98bhp between 5000-5500rpm and 178Nm of peak torque between 1750-4500rpm.

The Volkswagen Virtus’ mileage ranges between 18.12kmpl and 20.8kmpl. In contrast, the Volkswagen Taigun’s mileage ranges between 17.23kmpl and 19.2kmpl. These figures can vary depending on the engine and transmission, and they are ARAI-claimed mileage figures.

Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun: Pricing

In terms of pricing, the Volkswagen Taigun carries a price tag of Rs 11.70 lakh for the base model, the 1.0 Comfortline Petrol MT, and goes up to Rs 20 lakh for the top model, the 1.5 GT+ Edge Matte DSG ES.

In contrast, the Volkswagen Virtus’ price starts at Rs 11.56 lakh for the base model, the 1.0 Comfortline Petrol MT, and goes up to Rs 19.41 lakh for the top model, the 1.5 GT+ Edge Matte DSG.

Closing Words

Many carmakers made six airbags standard across the variants. However, it is worth mentioning that the Indian government proposed to mandate six airbags in all passenger cars within 2022 but that was postponed to October 1, 2023. But, this date has been deferred, as well. The official commencement date of this proposal remains to be declared.
