The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has rolled out new FASTag rules that will come into effect from August 1, 2024. The purpose behind this initiative is to streamline the toll collection process, thereby reducing congestion and, subsequently, improving the roadways nationwide.

These changes will also mandate users to keep their FASTag accounts updated so that people don’t face any potential inconveniences at the toll plazas. Failure to do so until October 31, 2024, will result in dawdling.

New FASTag Rules

1) Updated KYC and FASTag Replacement

Users who purchased the tags between 3 and 5 years ago must complete their KYC by October 31, 2024. The KYC update will rather help users, as they won’t have to face unforeseen service disruptions, as a result, they can have a seamless experience. Additionally, it is worth noting that FASTag must be replaced.

2) Linked Vehicle Verification

People who have bought a new vehicle must update the registration number on the FASTag within 90 days of purchase. From August 1, vehicle owners must update their vehicle’s chassis number, registration number, and the owner’s mobile number.

3) Linking Mobile Number

As mentioned above, the FASTag must be linked to the owner’s mobile number, which can ensure effective communication between FASTag providers and users.

4) Photo Upload

The users should also upload the images of their vehicle(s), including the front and side, alongside a clear photo of the FASTag affixed to it.

5) Database Verification

This is for the FASTag providers who must thoroughly conduct verification of their databases to ensure that the information linked to FASTags matches the details uploaded on the VAHAN website. This activity is essential for maintaining up-to-date data.

Closing Words

Complying with these new rules will only benefit the users as it will ensure a seamless experience; which will also avoid creating long queues at the toll plazas. In other news, India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH is also working on a satellite-based toll collection system, which is expected to be implemented nationwide in the near future.
