MG India has finally launched their highly anticipated electric crossover, the Windsor in the Indian market. This is a born electric vehicle with an unusual design, a fusion of a hatchback and an MPV. For those unware, this iteration is marketed as the Cloud EV overseas.

The MG Windsor EV has been launched at Rs 9.99 lakh in India. This is an introductory ex-showroom pricing. But that's the cost only for the car, as buyers will have to separately pay a subscription fee of Rs 3.5 per km for the battery under the BaaS rental programme.

BaaS Rental Programme

The brand has decided on the battery rental model for this car, which is something new. MG calls it the BaaS (Battery as a Service) model and they say this new model has been introduced to lower the ownership cost of the car as well as the per-km running cost in the longer run. It will be interesting to see how buyers perceive this new rental model of MG Motors India.

Exterior

The vehicle resembles an MPV from its exterior appearance, however, it is only available in a five-seater configuration and the dimensions and space are identical to a big hatchback, not an MPV.

The car follows a unique minimal design language and gets full-width DRLs and bumper-mounted headlamps.

The side profile of the car is also quite simple with flush door handles neat-looking machine-cut finished 18-inch alloy wheels and a large glass area which wraps around the back of the car.

In parallel, the LED taillamps of the car also wrap around the rear fender and are connected with an LED light bar to give the vehicle a modern look, which also blends it with the trend.

Interior

The minimal design language has been retained on the inside of the car. It has twin neat-looking screens; one 15.6-inch touch unit for the infotainment and the other is an 8.8-inch unit for instrumentation.

Since the Windsor is a born electric car, the space on the inside has been managed very well by the design department. It gets a floating centre console and a flat floor which makes the cabin feel spacious. The front seats can be reclined 135 degrees to achieve the “aero lounge seats” mode for enhanced comfort and increased rear legroom.

The vehicle is also equipped with necessary features like wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, rear AC vents, ventilated front seats, power-adjustable driver seat, panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, and a 9-speaker Infinity sound system.

The car also packs safety features like all-wheel disc brakes, ABS, EBD, ESP, six airbags, 360-degree camera, and more.

Performance

Propelling the Windsor EV is a front axle mounted single motor which churns out 136hp and 200Nm of torque. It also has four driving modes: Eco+, Eco, Normal and Sport. Powering this electric vehicle is a 38kWh LFP battery pack with prismatic cells, the brand claims a driving range of 331km.

The car supports up to 45kW fast charging which can charge the car from 0 to 80% in 55 minutes. The car also supports AC charging of 3.3kW and 7.7kW AC charging which can charge the battery from 0 to 100% in 14 hours and 6.5 hours, respectively.

Variants and Warranty

The MG Windsor is offered in three different variants Excite, Exclusive and Essence and there are four colour options available Starburst Black, Pearl White, Clay Beige, and Turquoise Green.

The brand is offering free public charging for the first year and a lifetime warranty for the battery for unlimited kilometres for early buyers.
