After the recent launch of the MG Windsor EV with the BaaS (Battery as a Service) ownership model, the British automaker is now offering that program on two other electric cars, MG Comet and MG ZS EV.
This model promises to make EVs affordable and accessible to the masses by bringing the pricing down significantly, at least at the time of purchasing the car.
Ownership Cost
The MG Comet is available at Rs 4.99 lakh which is Rs 2 lakh cheaper than its regular selling price of Rs 6.99 lakh. However, there will be an additional Rs 2.5 per kilometre rental cost for the battery.
Similarly, the MG ZS EV’s price has slashed by Rs 4.99 lakh as it is now available at Rs 13.99 lakh instead of Rs 18.98 Lakh. Like the other cars, this low acquisition cost comes with an additional battery rental cost of Rs 4.5 per kilometre.
So, these EVs have now become accessible to a lot of new buyers. However, the battery rental cost and charging will add up over time, so one will have to calculate their usage and then decide.
The Confusion
There is still a lot of confusion about the long-term ownership cost of the cars under the BaaS model. Questions like, What if I want to opt out of the BaaS programme and want complete ownership of the vehicle?
The brand has yet to provide more details about this programme. As of now, it is known that the brand will have telematic trackers in the cars for accurate measurement of the distance travelled.
A detailed breakup of the pricing, battery rental and charging costs of the MG Windsor is awaited by MG. Once the details of the MG Windsor are provided, we can get an idea about the other two vehicles as well.
