The Austrian two-wheeler manufacturer KTM is currently developing the 990 SMT (Supermoto Touring), and its engineering is a hybrid of the supermoto concept and the touring ability of an adventure bike. The way this bike is designed, it appears to give a tall stance, as seen on the KTM 990 Adventure, plus it draws design cues from KTM’s Duke and Adventure models.
Glimpse
The KTM 990 SMT bike is equipped with a liquid-cooled 947cc parallel-twin engine, which also powers the KTM 990 RC R and the 990 Duke. This LC8c engine is engineered to pump out 123bhp at 9500rpm and 103Nm of peak torque at 6750rpm. However, it is worth noting that the company is due to declare the specific figures for the engine output of the 990 SMT bike.
However, industry reports speculate that the 990 SMT-specific 947cc engine is likely to produce less power than the 990 Duke. KTM’s LC8c engine complies with the Euro5+ regulations, plus it is now made of new pistons, reprofiled crankshaft, and conrods.
This engine makes the rear wheel spin via a standard 6-speed transmission, further supported by a quick-shifter.
Despite the 990 SMT being similar looking to the 990 Adventure, both bikes have different wheels and tyres.
That said, the test mule of the former iteration shows a 17-inch alloy wheel along with a 120/70 road-focused tyre at the front (the 990 Adventure has a 21-inch front wheel), while the rear wheel (painted in orange) seems to be a 17-inch wheel with a tyre section of 180/55 ZR17 (similar to the 990 Duke).
Offerings
As mentioned earlier, the KTM 990 SMT looks similar to the 990 Adventure, therefore, there are similar-looking design elements that can be seen on the LED projector headlamp with LED DRLs, the tall visor, high-mounted turn lamps, and the muscular fuel tank.
Keeping that aside, other onboard features comprise TFT display unity with Bluetooth connectivity for smartphones, engine braking levels, wheelie control, traction control levels, multiple ride modes, and switchable ABS.
Launch
There is no hint or announcement from KTM India regarding the launch of the 990 Supermoto Touring (SMT). It is deemed that it will only launch in the international markets. However, KTM India is currently preparing to launch the new 390 Adventure bike, which is likely to arrive later this year or early next year (2025).
