The Mercedes G-Class EV has been revealed. This vehicle's concept was first shown at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year and then we also saw it at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2024. But now, the production vehicle broke the cover at the Beijing Motor Show as “Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology”.

The “Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology” looks similar to the recently launched G 450d. The boxy, rugged and bold stance of the G-Wagen is retained in its electric avatar as well. However, the brand has made many aerodynamic enhancements to make the vehicle more efficient than its ICE counterpart.

The G 580 has four motors, one mounted on each axle, producing 147hp each, which gives it a total combined power of 587hp and a whopping 1165Nm of torque. These numbers help the car go from 0 to 100kph in just 5 seconds and the brand has claimed the top speed of 180kph. Considering the enhanced aerodynamics and these power figures, the electric G-Wagen seems to be a ballistic machine.

Mercedes claims a range of 470kms, generated from a 116kWh battery pack, which has been borrowed from the EQS. This big battery can be fast-charged by a 200kW charger.

The G 580 has an independent front suspension with a new rigid axle at the rear, virtual rear differential locks, and shiftable low-range transmission. It has the ability to walk through the side slopes of up to 35 degrees like a cake. The vehicle also has a water wading capacity of 850mm which is 100mm higher than its ICE counterparts.

One of the cool features of the G 580 is the 'G-Turn', where the SUV uses all four of its motors to perform an on-the-spot 360-degree turn. This is one of the best party tricks and it can also be really helpful in tackling some difficult offroad situations.

Most of the ICE G-Wagens spend most of their lives on the tarmac but, we all know, these are one of the world’s best offroading cars and the brand claims the G 580 to be equally or more capable than its ICE counterparts.
