1) Hyundai Exter: Rs 6.13 to Rs 10.28 Lakh (Ex-Showroom) 

If you want the most reliable feature-loaded sub-compact crossover SUV on a restrained budget, the Hyundai Exter is our top pick. As you know, Hyundai holds a strong brand value in India, plus its new-age vehicles have a long list of attractive offerings.

The features include a single-pane sunroof, power windows (front and rear), a dashcam, a wireless phone charger, cruise control, a semi-digital instrument cluster, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, rain-sensing wipers, a tyre pressure monitor, a rear camera, six airbags (standard), etc. 

The Hyundai Exter has a 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol unit with an output of 82bhp and 114Nm of peak torque. It can be paired with a five-speed manual and an optional five-speed AMT unit. In parallel, the Exter CNG produces 67bhp and 95Nm of torque, limited to the five-speed manual transmission. The ARAI-claimed mileage ranges between 19.2kmpl and 27.1km/kg.

The Punch has features like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, LED lights, reverse camera, powered ORVMs, a cooled glovebox, a button start, etc., It also has connected car technology, a single-pane sunroof, a semi-digital instrument cluster, and dual airbags (standard). 

This homegrown sub-four-metre SUV is exclusively powered by a 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is tuned to churn out 84bhp and 113Nm of peak torque. It has a standard five-speed manual and an optional five-speed AMT unit. The ARAI-claimed of the Tata Punch ranges between 18.8kmpl and 26.99km/kg. 

The Tata Punch’s ground clearance is 187mm. 

3) Maruti Suzuki Swift: Rs 6.49 Lakh to Rs 9.64 Lakh (Ex-Showroom) 

The fourth-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift was recently launched in India at an affordable price. The India-spec Swift misses out on ADAS and a few more features, unlike its international version, but it’s loaded enough to give competition in its segment in India. It is, however, based on the same Heartect platform as its predecessor.

The 2024 Swift has a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, a wireless charger, a 6-speaker Arkamys audio system, a push start/stop button, connected car technology, cruise control, six airbags (standard), etc. It also has a digital instrument cluster, powered ORVMs, and LED lights (front and rear).  

This popular hatchback is now powered by a new Z-series 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol unit, which produces 80.46bhp and 111.7Nm of torque, coupled with a standard five-speed manual and an optional five-speed AMT unit. The ARAI-claimed mileage of the Swift ranges between 24.8kmpl and 25.75kmpl. 

The new Maruti Suzuki Swift has a ground clearance of 163mm. 

4) Nissan Magnite: Rs 6 Lakh to Rs 11.27 Lakh (Ex-Showroom) 

The Nissan Magnite is Nissan India’s one of the bestselling vehicles. In fact, this vehicle is deemed to safeguard Nissan’s exit from India. In addition, this vehicle secured a four-star safety rating in the ASEAN crash test.

Features on-board comprise LED lights (front and rear), an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, a 7-inch instrument cluster, auto HVAC, cruise control, engine start/stop button, a 360-degree camera, connected car technology, etc. It also has dual airbags (standard), a tyre pressure monitor, power windows (all), electric ORVMs, and ambient lighting (optional feature). 

The Nissan Magnite has two petrol engine options: a 1.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit. The former unit pumps out 71.01bhp and 96Nm of torque, while the latter produces 98.63bhp and 160Nm of peak torque. These engines are available in manual and automatic transmissions. The Nissan Magnite’s mileage ranges between 17.40kmpl and 20kmpl. These are ARAI-claimed figures. 

The ground clearance of the Magnite is rated at 205mm. 

5) Mahindra XUV 3XO: Rs 7.49 Lakh to Rs 15.49 Lakh (Ex-Showroom)  

It is worth noting that most variants of the Mahindra XUV 3XO can be bought under Rs 15 lakh (on-road), except for selected top variants. It is the facelifted and rebadged version of the Mahindra XUV 300. 

The new 3XO is also feature-loaded, as it packs LED lights (front and rear), dual-zone climate control, two 10.25-inch screens (touchscreen infotainment unit and digital instrument cluster), and a panoramic sunroof. It also has an auto-hold function, a 360-degree camera, a cooled glove box, a rear wiper with a washer, and six airbags, to name a few. 

The XUV 300 facelift (now 3XO) continues to be powered by the same 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit (TGDi), a new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol (TCMPFi), and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel unit (CRDe). The old turbo-petrol engine produces 129bhp and 230Nm of torque, while the new turbo-petrol unit delivers 110bhp and 200Nm of torque. Lastly, the turbo-diesel unit generates 115bhp and 300Nm of torque. All engines are available with manual and automatic transmissions. 

The Mahindra XUV 3XO’s mileage ranges between 17.96kmpl and 21.2kmpl (ARAI-claimed). 

The ground clearance of the XUV 3XO is unknown but as per sources, it’s more than 180mm. 

6) Tata Tiago EV: Rs 7.99 Lakh to Rs 11.89 Lakh (Ex-Showroom)

This is one of the most affordable five-seater EVs out there. The MG Comet can be considered an alternative on the pricing front but it would make sense for those who are unmarried or want to have a secondary car. Comparatively, the Tata Tiago EV is a proper family car. For your reference, the MG Comet’s price starts at Rs 6.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 9.40 lakh (ex-showroom). 

The Tiago EV has features like auto HVAC, powered windows, cruise control, 2 drive modes, auto headlamps, auto-dimming IRVM, connected car technology, a leatherette upholstery, rain-sensing wipers, rear wiper with a washer, and LED lights (front and rear). It also has dual airbags (standard), a tyre pressure monitor, a rear camera with guidelines, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit by Harman, and a fully digital instrument cluster, to name a few.     

There are two battery packs for this vehicle: a 19.2kWh and a 24kWh. The former produces 60.34bhp and 110Nm of torque, while the latter produces 73.75bhp and 114Nm of peak torque. The smaller battery pack has a claimed range of 250km, while the larger pack has a claimed range of 315km. 

Both battery packs get the same 25kW fast charger, which can replenish both battery packs from 10-80% in 58 minutes.

However, the smaller battery pack has a standard charger of 3.3kW, which replenishes the battery from 10-100% in 6.9hrs, whereas the larger battery pack has a standard charger of 7.2kW that can refuel it from 10-100% in 3.6hrs. 

The Tata Tiago EV's ground clearance remains unknown, but as per sources, it is more than 166mm.
