It is a great time to be a motorcycle enthusiast in India! KTM brought its big bikes to our shores, Triumph expanded its lineup in the mid-capacity tier, Aprilia got the momentum going with its RS 457 sportsbike, Royal Enfield is spoiling retro bike lovers with big-twin-cylinder motorcycles and now Brixton Motorcycles has charted its course for India. 

If the name doesn’t ring any bell, you are not at fault. Brixton is a fairly new player on the motorcycle scene and is essentially a child of Austria’s KSR Group. Revealed to the world in 2015 at the EICMA in Milan, Brixton as a brand has focused on making neo-retro motorcycles across various engine displacement categories. Named after the area in the south of London, UK, Brixton’s retro motorcycles are manufactured in China to keep the costs accessible. 

After dwindling in the European markets for almost a decade, Brixton is now eager to get into the Indian market – the world’s hotbed of motorcycling activity. But how will a baby brand like Brixton find its footing in a market dominated by the likes of Royal Enfield and Triumph?

Brixton Motorcycles: Introduction to the brand

Brixton Motorcycles started out its journey in 2015 at the EICMA as an Austrian manufacturer of neo-retro motorcycles. Austrians have a good reputation for building off-road-centric motorcycles, with KTM being their finest example. But Brixton had a different strategy.

Taking a page out of Royal Enfield, Brixton started with smaller displacement motorcycles and eventually made its way up to the multi-cylinder offerings. Models like the Cromwell 125, Crossfire 125, sunray 125 and Rayburn 125 have given the brand some traction in the affordable segments. 

In India though, Brixton will compete as a maker of larger displacement multi-cylinder motorcycles – as far as its beginning is concerned. The brand has partnered with KAW Veloce Motors Private Ltd to set up a manufacturing facility in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. The facility will allow Brixton to produce 40,000 units of their offering annually.

While the brand will arrive with four of its mid-capacity motorcycles initially, Brixton will design and produce India-centric models in the latter stage.

Brixton Motorcycles India-bound models at a glance

Crossfire 500X

The Crossfire 500X is a neo-retro roadster that’s meant for both on and off-tarmac duties. This is more of a road-going motorcycle that isn’t scared of the dirt tracks, a nature suggested by its wire-spoke wheels wearing Pirelli tyres and KYB suspension. 

The Crossfire 500X stands out with its flat and minimalist styling and its beefy 486 cc twin-cylinder engine that produces 47.6 hp of peak power at 8,500 RPM and 43 Nm of peak torque at 4,350 RPM. This engine puts this motorcycle on par with the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. The minimalist retro digital instrumentation along with the all-LED illumination on the motorcycle should make this one popular with young riders. 

Crossfire 500XC

The Crossfire 500XC is a scrambler variant of the Crossfire 500XC. While it keeps the 486 cc twin-cylinder engine from the roadster without any change in its performance tuning, the XC variant gives the motorcycle 19-inch front wheels, Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tyres, high-set handlebars, bash plate for the engine, raised front mudguard and more off-road bits. The long-travel suspension should make it a worthy alternative to the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 upon its arrival. 

Cromwell 1200

The Cromwell 1200 is a retro roadster with Brixton’s latest 1,200 cc twin-cylinder engine that produces 82 bhp of peak power at 6,500 RPM and 108 Nm of peak torque at 3,100 RPM. This then is for serious riders who know how to tap into performance. 

Although the Cromwell 1200 celebrates the retro design of old British roadsters from the past, the motorcycle houses all modern bits, promising a brutal performance profile. The model features an all-LED lighting setup along with Bosch ABS and traction control system, multiple riding modes and cruise control, making it ideal for young riders seeking all sorts of electrical assistance. The Pirelli Phantom Sportscomp tyres should only add to the overall riding experience. 

Cromwell 1200X

The Cromwell 1200X is a scrambler variant of the vanilla model, adding some cool off-road bits to the package. More off-road friendly tyres and design elements, raised handlebar, flyscreen, headlight guard and some more bits. 

Brixton Motorcycles India launch and pricing

Brixton Motorcycles is kickstarting its journey in the Indian market by going up against the likes of Royal Enfield, Triumph and Classic Legends. 

The Brixton 500X has been launched at a price of INR 4.74 lakhs ex-showroom whereas the Brixton 500XC, which is its scrambler iteration, comes in at INR 5.19 lakhs. Both of these are way pricier than the recently launched Bear 650 and the Interceptor 650 motorcycles from Royal Enfield.

Meanwhile, the Cromwell 1200 comes in at a price of INR 7.84 lakhs ex-showroom whereas the Cromwell 1200X with the additional 'scrambler bits' costs INR 9.10 lakhs.
