Apple is reportedly preparing a big leap in performance for its future iPhones. According to a tipster on Chinese platform Weibo, the upcoming iPhone 18 series could be the first to feature 2nm chipsets, bringing faster speeds and improved efficiency to Apple’s smartphones.
The new processors, expected to be called A20 and A20 Pro, may also power Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
iPhone 18 and the First 2nm Apple Chip
The standard iPhone 18 is tipped to feature the A20 chip, which is reportedly codenamed “Borneo.” Meanwhile, the Pro models — iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max — could use the more powerful A20 Pro, which might also be the processor behind the much-rumored iPhone Fold.
This would make the A20 series Apple’s first chip built on the 2nm process, a major step beyond the 3nm A19 and A19 Pro chips currently powering the iPhone 17 lineup.
Apple’s Foldable iPhone Plans
The foldable iPhone, rumored to be called the iPhone Fold, is expected to arrive with a horizontal folding design and a flexible LTPO+ OLED screen that unfolds into a tablet-like display — roughly the size of an iPad Mini. Reports also suggest Apple is working to minimize the crease on the folding panel, something rivals like Samsung and Huawei have struggled to perfect.
A New iPhone Every Year
Interestingly, the tipster also shared details about Apple’s broader product roadmap. Between 2026 and 2028, Apple may unveil a phone with a new form factor every year, starting with the foldable iPhone and continuing with future experimental designs.
Competition in the 2nm Race
Apple isn’t the only company chasing 2nm technology. Samsung is working on its Exynos 2600, while Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is currently built on TSMC’s 3nm process. By moving to 2nm, Apple could set a new benchmark in smartphone performance.
